Trauma; Emotional pain and Physical pain
Tonight brought both physical and emotional pain. Ouch.
I felt relaxed and motivated and relatively pain-free for most of today. I even went to the gym. I probably did a little more than I should have at the gym (I used to be able to do so much before fibro...) and I am feeling the pain and repercussions now.
Then in the evening I had a good dinner with my family and was writing and baking (despite achey knees and sensitive muscles). Everyone in the house seemed to be enjoying themselves pretty well... and then it got late and my dad had a psychotic break. It was a small incident, especially in comparison to what he used to do, but it was extremely disheartening. My dad has psychotic depression. From my first memories to junior year in high school, my dad would have frequent outbursts-- screaming fits, yelling at my mom, saying things about how we don't love him and are afraid of him, waving his hands around, cornering me, screaming irrational and scary things. These outbursts tapered down towards my senior year in high school when my dad started meds, but they didn't go away completely.
My dad rarely has these sorts of outbursts anymore, so when this came up tonight (right around the time when his meds wear off), I was hit totally off-guard with a strong wave of fear, upset, trauma memories, and my mom even called my reaction PTSD. My dad eventually went to bed, and I was just left standing in the kitchen, my hands starting to shake. My body started shaking slightly and I started having skin pain (I guess an emotional fibro reaction). All of the upset feelings of emotional abuse from years ago resurfaced.
I managed to handle it all pretty well in the moment (even though every time I heard a noise, I got scared that it was my dad sneaking up on us to come scream more), but I know this will be on my mind and heart over the next few days. And I'm also just feeling very wishy-washy emotionally.
I have never considered myself as having PTSD, I just thought that I had experienced some emotional trauma. Well, whatever it is classified as, it isn't fun.
Thankfully, I have this wonderful community. I'm just feeling kinda upset andc confused and I want to get a giant bear hug from somebody, but I'm in pain.
That's it for now.
