The test
The test of whether the book is any good is if when I apply the knowledge, do I CHANGE? If I can't apply what I learn, then what I learned has no intrinsic value. What I'm looking for is material change; in my behaviors, my thoughts, and my feelings. If I begin losing my codependent addictiveness, then the book will be worth reading for others, and my friends who are still stuck in the grieving process of shame. Let's see what transpires. One interesting line that my friends have used over and over relates to me as this one: "Shame-based intellectuals love to analyze" (Pg. 162). It shields us from acknowledging our feelings. He uses the 12 step program to overcome the feelings of shame which we carry for others (usually our family of origin). Fascinating info for a guy like me! Hope everyone had a good 4th of July, and has a good weekend!
