The Seasons

I have lived in Canada, western Canada my whole life.  I know the seasons....summer, winter, winter, and winter.  I'm well aware that snow will fly in October....occasionally September and the cold and wet will stick around until April or May.  I know spring is sopping and chilly, and fall is so windy that the leaves don't fall gently from your trees but rather are ravaged by gusts large enough to cause a person to stagger.

Yet, come the cold, come the snow, come the chill....and I just want to curl up in a ball and hibernate!  I know it's coming, but it doesn't matter.  I find myself acting bitter and snarling at everything.  I wake up in the dark and I go to bed in the dark.  Cold seeps in our windows and everytime I let the dogs out I wish I didn't have dogs so I didn't have to open the door.  I keep the blinds closed because the snow is only beautiful as it falls, but then turns to miserable, gray slush and the landscape mellows to gray.  Everything dies, and even the birds have better sense then to sing as they cling to barren branches.

Marlow loves the winter, the snow.  She enjoys sledding and frolicking around.  I hate it.  And I feel bad, and Joey calls me on it repeatedly, that I don't want to take her outside.  I don't want to go traipsing through heavy snow, where she can dance on the crust and I sink knee deep.  I don't want to feel my shoes fill with water, as boots arent affordable, and my toes go numb.  I don't want to see the sparkles on the undisturbed white vastness ringed by dirt and mud.  I don't want my fingers to slowly stiffen in the cold and turn red as can be.

I HATE winter.  I always have, and I always will.  But I LOVE Canada....so I guess it's just one of those sacrifices.  I'll just have to continue plugging my vitamin D, listening to Joey berate me because I hate the snow, and keep all the blinds closed for the next six months.

Wish me luck.
