The New Blood Test
I hadn't been so happy since they came up with a way for older women to still have children. That was back in the 90s when this woman in her 60s had a baby. Donated egg, of course, but as a woman who'd never wanted kids and had started worrying if I'd change my mind, this freed me. I knew that if I changed my mind I could still give birth. I didn't change my mind, but it freed me to move on without fear.
Now, for the new blood test. They announced that there is a new blood test coming out in a few years that will determine if you'll get dementia or not. Frankly, when I first heard this I thought, who would want to know? I mean there's no cure for it. It took me a while to figure out how this helps me. But it does.
See, before I worried that as a woman living alone that I could develop dementia and not know it. I pictured myself getting paranoid and maybe setting the house on fire or something. I feared I would forget how to care for myself and any animal I have.
So, that's the beauty of this test. At about 75 I'm going to get it. Hopefully, there will be a cure for it by then. But if not, knowing the results means that I can get myself in place before it happens. Now, I don't believe it ever will happen to me anymore than I believed that I'd have a kid at 60, but, the test means that I can make decisions and carry them out. I'll basically be my own daughter in a way, making decisions for her mother. Given the life expectancy of 100 in my family, the decisions of my 75 year old self sounds perfect.
You know, years ago I said I'll never fear not having kids to take care of me in old-age because technology will do the job. Now we've got smart gadgets that can detect falls, robots that hand out medications and contacts the doctor, etc. This is a perfect time to be old in my book and I no longer fear it.
My, gosh, who knows what'll be around in the next ten years!
