the last blueberry muffin

When Leslie was in the hospital she was given an abundance of "snacks" as she wasn't able to eat a full meal. Sometimes these were individually wrapped Otis Spunkmeyer blueberry muffins. Leslie liked blueberry muffins, but knew I loved them, so she always gave them to me to take home (she ate very little of what she was given).

This morning I was cleaning up (something I've done very little of in the past month) and found a bag from the day Leslie left the hospital to come home to die. In it was a binder hospice had given me, some paperwork, and the last of the blueberry muffins.

I sat down with my morning coffee and thought (and cried) about Leslie while I ate that last muffin. The last thing Leslie would ever give me.

Except love.

It's so unbelievably hard. I have something Ed gave me the last time I saw him...the day before he died. I treasure the moment. Such a little thing, a blueberry muffin. But it speaks volumes as to how much your daughter loved/loves you. Her thoughtfulness, at such a crisis point in her life, to put aside a muffin for you just because you love them. Such a love endures for eternity.

Leslie thinking of you, her forever mom... No greater gift than that is there? I'm sure that "last" blueberry muffin had so many memories and love contained within it. A tangible reminder of a forever bond that you two will always share.

I adore making blueberry muffins with my Little's and now will have another reminder of Leslie.

Loving care as you feel all that you need to and welcoming some pauses in the midst when they do come because they will...
