The Day After The 3rd year Mark
Dear Nick:
The past two days have been so lonely. I miss you so much. I don't think that will ever stop. Today was a little easier because by now you were no longer in pain. I still cannot believe you are "dead". You always were so very alive. I must believe you are still alive but in another dimension. I must believe you are busy, well and happy and experiencing wonders you never believed existed.
Today had some really good parts to it. First of all Amanda (our oldest "adopted honorary granddaughter" ) has been visiting her parents. Believe it or not, our little girl is all grown up, married and has a 6 month old baby boy. I haven't seen Amanda since the Christmas Eve just before you died. Remember, we didn't know she was home from the Navy and she jumped out of that great big box in front of their Christmas tree? I wish you could have been there today to see her. She is a beautiful young woman and makes an adorable new Mommy. Her hair is really long and naturally curly now. We had such a good visit. We thought of you and the last time you were with us.
Earlier today it was Jeff's 54th birthday. He is now just one year younger than you were when you had to leave us. We all met at Mitchell's and had a surprise birthday party brunch for him. It was really a lot of fun and he was truly surprised.
Remember that hiking trip we took in The Needles area? That's the one where I hurt my leg on the dismount from the trail head. Well, that injury has paid me back in spades. For the past year I have been limping like I'm 105 years old and I've been using a cane. Well, Monday I go to the hospital for a total hip replacement. Yes, I am scared. Never had any surgery like this before. Part of me wishes you were here with me. The other part is glad that you can't see what poor shape you hiking partner is in!! Anyway, I will remember the courage you showed during all the pain you endured. I'll cowboy up, put on my "big girl's pants" and get 'er done!
That catches you up on the main things down here. I think of you every day with much love. My heart is with you.
Love,
