The Baptismal Burn

I'm an athiest.  I don't hide it, I don't shy away from religious topics in order to hide my true feelings.  Sometimes being an athiest and having a flesh eating disease feel like the same thing.  People often shun me when they find out.  I've actually been spit on once.

I may not believe, but I have no contempt, no loathing, no anger, towards those who do believe.  I have never told a child that God or Jesus are not real.  I have never snorted when an older person says 'God Bless.'  I totally understand that too them they are wishing me well.  I even go as far as to attend Luthern(I was baptized as such) services with my Grandma at Christmas if she asks.  I don't believe, but I will support her belief.  If Marlow want's to explore religion when she is older, I'll encourage her.  I think it's a personal choice to put your faith where you want it.

Now, Joeys grandmother is getting re-baptized this weekend.  I think it's sort of a 'wash away lifes sins' kinda thing.  She lost her husband last year and isn't doing so well herself, so I think she may be trying to ready herself for death.  Joey's one cousin is getting baptized for the first time, and her mom(his aunt) is doing it with her for support.  So three of them are getting baptized.  I was invited weeks ago to come.  I told them that I would do my best to see if I could make it.  It's an hour away, the roads are icy and snowed all over.  And in the end I can't go because of a previous engagement I forgot about.

Joey's got like, seven aunts, on that side of his family.  And one fbooked me today and told me that I shouldn't come to the service.  I hadn't told anyone I couldn't make it yet.  She told me that someone as black souled as me has no place in a house of the Lord.  She told me that I would just be an embarassment and that I would bring bad luck upon those in the church.  She actually said that my prescense may taint the holy water.

I was baptized, I was raised as a Luthern.  I attended church services up until I was nine, and later on, in an attempt to garner some faith, I attended youth services.

I'm not going to run around the church screaming 'God is a fake!'  'Jesus doesn't exist!'  I mean, I can't go anyway, but it really bothered me that she would take it upon herself to uninvite me.  Joey's grandma personally invited me, and she knows about my faith in religion.  I may not beleive but that doesn't mean I can't offer my support.

I don't believe in Santa either, but does that mean I should be excluded from Christmas??  I'm just upset, I cried a little after I got the message.  I see her point, sort of, but I think she stepped over the line a little.
