Taking a Step

Well, tomorrow we will leave for AL.  It will be the first time going back to AL since Ken died.  We are going about 50 miles north of where he lived to watch is son, my grandson's spring football game.

I love her and the kids and they are what I have left of Ken's on-going life.  It is his wife of 27 1/2 years, his kids, his grandkids.  My grandkids and great grandkids.
So here's hoping for a good visit, a winning game for the spring football game, and knowing Kenny would want us to be there.
I love you Ken.  We will be watching the game for you son.  Love mom

It sounds like she might have been the distant one all along in the relationship. You have a right to visit and to see your grandkids. Let the kids know how much you care and let them know they can contact you anytime. The whole situation is awkward for all. Just keep in contact with the kids. Enjoy the trip even though it will be difficult at times.

You will be there for Ken, and his son, and if your daughter in law has an issue then so be it. I hope it is a good trip, and that perhaps some progress will be made in understanding her feelings. Take pictures!!!

You need to talk to her one on one and face to face. Tell her that you really want that connection because it is very important to you but you need to know how she really feels. I hope everything turns out just the way you want it to. hugs j

You are doing what I would do in your situation. I would keep trying to form a relationship and let my grandson, especially know that I care. Here\'s hoping all goes well and you have a wonderful time and your grandson wins his ball game. Truly your friend, BarbaraWawa

In-law relationships can be weird and sometimes we don\'t know where it all starts. My brother\'s wife (she passed in 2002) was always extremely uncomfortable with our family and referred to herself and my hubby, Rick, as the \"out-laws\", though Rick never felt that at all. In fact we both feel blessed that in-law relationships were so solid ~ I loved his parents and he loves mine. No meddling and always welcome everywhere.

But to get back to my sister-in-law. She was especially wary of my sister, Carol, who lives in upstate New York and once even accused her of trying to give her food poisoning! Nevertheless she was the love of my brother\'s life (married for 32 years). It took him a long time to recover from her loss but now he is very happy with a new girlfriend. And now Carol claims that she always adored Bitz!

It\'s so hard to say what starts this weirdness and I\'m sorry that you feel awkward about embarking on this trip.

Wishing you Godspeed as you go to watch your grandson Play Ball!

Love, tight hugs and thoughts of peace ~ Debbie

Good luck on your trip, Sandi. Family relationships are definitely hard but, I think you are doing the right thing....taking the relationship with your DIL one step at a time. It is going to be so wonderful to see the grandchildren. I hope your grandson\'s game is a winner! Safe journey....Love and Peace to you. Anne

Sometimes you have to be a little selfish and you and hubby need this trip to see your grandkids and great grandkids. If she is a little distant then just don\'t let that bother you. Enjoy and be safe. Love toyou. Robin
