Standing!!!!!!
I had a 3 day course of high dose steroids then 2 weeks later another course of them. The result, I am moving better & stronger then I have been in a yr. Saturday April 7 I was at home. I had to use the bathroom, we do not have a lift at home so I had to move on to the commode on my own. I was in a hurry so I did not use the transfer board. I was able to lift my butt off of the couch & partly stand to move onto the commode. When I saw my physio the following Tues. I told her about it & I told her I wanted to work on standing. Last week in physio I would scoot forward plant my feet on the floor & raise my butt off of the chair. I did that 3-5 times. Tues of this week during physio I asked if I could try to stand. I DID IT, I STOOD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would stand for 10-15 sec's then sit down. I did this three times. The last time I let go of the bar & stood on my own.
The physio & her assistant block my knees. They say if my legs are going to give out they have to bend. So they do not let them bend. Today I had physio again & you guest it I stood again. I did it 5 x's this time. All three times I would let go of the bar. My muscles are not used to working together anymore. It felt like I was going to fall over backwards. I then realized the reason for it. I was not putting weight on the balls of my feet. I was putting all of my weight on my heals.
I do not know how long this will last, but I am enjoying it now. I hope to get to the point of being able to pivot transfer. That may take awhile. They want to make sure this is going to last. I hope taking steroids every month will keep this going. I am still waiting for an appointment in the MS clinic. So I do not know when I get the next dose of chemotherapy, I hope it is soon. The good news if I can learn to walk again & manage to walk 40 M (120 Ft) I will qualify for the MS drugs.
I am 2/3 through the crisis intervention training. I am looking forward to working the crisis lines. It feels good to go there I am treated just like a reg person. I was told tonight not only are they making me a spot to work from. They are going to get me a special desk so I can work without causing me stain. I told the volunteer coordinator I was interested in doing office work. There is allot they could use help with. She talked to her boss & they talked about it in a meeting. Everybody is behind me working there. They are very interested at making it easier for me & to make the center as friendly as possible for "different ability persons" not handicap. They believe in accepting people how they are. It just feels great. All of the women at the training are the same way.
