Specialist appt today
So I went to the long awaited appointment with the orthopedic surgeon today... hmmm, didn't feel very productive. But then I wasn't expecting magic, its only an appointment. However I really felt like I didn't even acknowledge me, I was just another 'back patient'... he talked nonstop while I was there, barely gave me a chance to say anything and the appt was so fast - maybe 5 minutes. He was still asking me questions as he walked out the door. He gave me the speech about exercising, walking, lose weight, blah blah blah, I've heard that all a million times so far. The only good thing that came out of the appt is that he IS ordering an MRI - finally. But he didn't seem convinced that it would show him much, he said it will be pretty much like the CT scan but a bit better. Now I"m not sure how long it will take to get this done but there are long wait times for most of these things around here. For $680 and a 4 hr drive I could get one done any time but I can't afford that. I was awfully discouraged when I first came out of the office but I'm doing better now. I think I was most upset about the fact that he didn't talk to me, he didn't ask anything about my pain, how bad it is, where it is (except to affirm it is my back and leg), how it is affecting my mobility and work. I did manage to jump in and let him know I am off work - he thought that was just so I could get to my physio but I said no its due to the pain and medication. He actually said 'well hopefully you can wean off that soon" ummmmm what is supposed to change to make that possible? The only thing that caused him the least concern was that it hurts when he tries to straighten out my right leg... that meant something to him. I know these doctors see many patients and I'm just another one but there's no need to be so callous and indifferent. I was told he didn't have great bedside manner and now I see why people say that. Hopefully the MRI shows him something that will get his attention; if not I am asking for another referral to get a second opnion... I am not willing to accept this pain for the rest of my life. I am doing all the things I've been told to do and its not getting better. I will continue to do all the stuff they say, hopefully soon something will change for the better.
