Social media exposure woes

Sigh.

Sometimes I tell myself that I don't care how much attention my art gets, or that I shouldn't care and I should draw whatever I want. But I do care. I care a lot. But the way I create things doesn't seem to suit social media?

I don't have a consistent style of art or content. I post whatever I make, colored or uncolored, illustration, comic, or piece of architecture. I won't lie, I WANT to have thousands of followers, hundreds of likes on every post, and dozens of comments every time I post. I want people who want to see my content. I want to write stories that keep people wanting to see what happens next. I want to be able to love art and have a social media presence at the same time, something I seem to struggle with immensely now.

I don't have a single style and don't like being confined to one. I don't want to pretend I do, either. My feed looks like a mess of different colors and is very inconsistent. I don't want to feel forced to create one thing.

But I have another way of looking at this. If I have one thing that I'm known for, one thing I'm comfortable making, will that give me a consistent, easy thing to do while also gaining followers? Right now, that is detailed comic pages. Right now, that is comic timelapses. That's what was gaining me exposure and followers, when I was posting those up until a couple weeks ago. I stopped partially because I wanted to do something different, like I was being too complacent where I was PLUS it actually took me so much time to MAKE that content. Inking entire large comic pages with so much detail and editting a video for it once a week takes a lot of time! And in the end I wasn't actually making progress on the comic because I was making those videos. Each page took too long and I started burning out.

Like, making art isn't even fun anymore. I feel like I'm just pumping out art to post on social media! Every week I stress about what I'm going to post, especilaly since I switched my posting schedule to twice a week thinking it'd get me more exposure. I'm realizing posting frequency doesn't actually matteru so much as CONSISTENCY. The way your feed looks. That's how people determine if they want to follow you, they want assurance that they know what they're signing up for. That's how I follow people, after all, so I get it.

So, I'm going to change this. Something needs to give because I am not having a good time right now.

I don't think I told you yet, but I saw one of your time lapses on Instagram. My daughter let me use her account to see it. It was amazing! My kids were impressed too and very little impresses them these days. We all thought it was exceptional! But, I understand that the quality of your work is not what gets you social media attention. You know I write stories on Wattpad and I often notice that my best stories aren't the ones that get the most reads. I've managed to detach from it pretty well, but I still do check at least once a day to see how my numbers are doing. Social media can be toxic sometimes. Some people find that a fast from social media for a time can be healing. When it all comes down to it, you can't put your identity in anything that you can lose. The applause of the crowd is fickle and easily lost. Maybe think about what makes you the person you are. I have chosen to put my identity in being a child of God because that can't be taken from me even when my health fails and my beauty fades. Much love.
