Shingles again

So, for the 4th time this year I have come down with an outbreak of shingles. I had my first outbreak when I was 20 years old and several times during the years but never this much. Only 4% of the population that contracts shingles have recurring episodes and it's almost unknown for it to happen to one person as many times as me. The third time this year I went through a whole battery of tests trying to find a reason why my immune system might be suppressed and nothing showed up abnormal. So basically my doctor says he just doesn't know...I consume a healthy diet, avoid sunlight and excessive heat and anything else possible that might put my body through stress, but I can't avoid the grief. My doctor said emotional stressors can be just as powerful in compromising my immune system and allowing the shingles to emerge.
I am not contagious. Shingles comes from the chicken pox virus, which we nearly all carry. That virus lives at the base of the spine and usually doesn't cause any more trouble, but mutates with time and can cause a shingles outbreak. It's usually in older patients or immunosuppressed patients. I am 45 years old and like I said, had my first outbreak at 20. Besides being a little overweight I am healthy and not immunosuppressed. Fortunately this year every outbreak has been less intense and painful than the one preceding it. It makes me think that my immune system is getting stronger at keeping it in check.
But what it also tells me is that I can do all the right things physically, but if I can't get myself straightened out emotionally and psychologically there is no telling what effect it will have on my health.
I am so f***ing mad!!! After what I have been through and still have to go through, I am starting to see my physical body fail me as well. Suicide is the gift that keeps on giving.
I simply HAVE to find a more productive way to feel and express my emotions. I have a dear friend who is battling pancreatic cancer and she is one of the happiest and most positive people I know!!!
I HAVE, HAVE, HAVE to get to a place where I am more grateful, more calm, more serene, not just for my mental health but my physical health as well. Going to my friend to her chemo appointments, radiation, etc., it isn't something I want to add to the crosses I have to bear. I HAVE to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time and worrying myself sick about the future. Someday I will look back on these times and wish I had enjoyed life rather than merely tolerating it. When I think about it, in history it was common for women to lose children, either in childbirth, illness, war, etc. It has happened from the beginning of time and though it doesn't make our suffering any less we should admire the courage of our ancestors who had to accept death as a part of life, even where their children were concerned.
Thank God I have an appointment with my psychiatrist Monday and I am going to discuss all this with him and see if there is something that can help chemically or else refer me to a counselor who might be able to help me.
I can't grieve forever, yet I know I will. I MUST move on but I can't leave Cassi behind. Somehow I have to find a way to integrate her, the loss of her, and the rest of my life. She is in every cell of my body, moving on, wherever I go, whatever I do, I carry her with me. I KNOW this, yet it's still easier said than done...but I'm tired, so tired of being beaten down, a depressed shell of a person hiding away from the world in my house...and I am really tired of these damned shingles that keep popping up to torture me and remind me that even though I might be healthy, I am not Okay. I want to be Okay.

I am so sorry Gina. Shingles are the pits. It is as frustrating as hell! I wish there was a magic pill (okay, I\'ve said that before - many times) but there is no magic.
I am glad you are going to talk to your psychiatrist. I hope s/he has a magic pil or referral to a good therapist who can help you deal with the feelings.
I have a son and DIL who are anxiety ridden. Tiina found it helpful to have a punching bag to release anger. Now she and Andrew have taken up fencing. They love it. I guess what I am getting at is finding a way to express feelings.
And do come here and let it all out - the anger, frustration, feelings of helplessness - we can\'t fix it but we can listen and understand.
Love and tight hugs, M

I\'m so sorry that you have the shingles again, Gina. Bummer!!! Your journal I have read through several times and within it are your questions and your answers. Your umbilical cord back to yourself and to your Source of LOVE and well-being is what I feel as I read this. It becomes a well worn path for each of us as we step forward, backward and take moments off the path too. Perhaps you have been \"off\" for awhile and are now back on taking what has come into your heart and into your BEing and you are truly ready now. It comes to each of us in its own way, in its own time, yet it\'s a choice and I feel that you are at a crossroad perhaps once again and I\'m so very grateful to know you are seeking counsel with those who can help. I find myself at this crossroad often after almost eight years so it\'s not something for me that just happened \"once\" yet again and again as I\'m ready and sometimes even when I have not felt ready or even been aware, I\'m almost thrust back into the healing.

Keep journaling, getting it out and not taking it back in. That is what I find the most difficult, as I can get it out quite easily whatever \"it\" may be, yet slowly I may begin to take the pieces back if I\'m not careful and mindful. My body always lets me know when I am and IS my barometer of truth even if my mind and heart may be trying to say something to the contrary.

Please let us know how your appointments go and if there are suggestions that might be helpful for us too. I am always learning from each of you daily.

Gentle, gentle care dearest mom of Cassi.

Onward and upward we journey together,
XO Joanie

You are not leaving Cassie behind you never will. You are good to see the professional I believe this will help you greatly. I understand it is very hard to get order in ones life after a loss.

As you know stress is a big factor with the immune system and the herpetic virus. It will creep up and bit you, in your case is has big time. As Joanie said keep talking and journaling get it off your chest, we will always listen.

Tight hugs

Gina, I have had recurring shingles as well. I have probably had it about 10 times, but each time, it easier. The lesions got smaller each time. Oddly enough, I have never had a recurrence since my son died. Maybe it ran itself out by them, even though they told me that stress could bring it on. So going on 8 years now, no shingles! Sometimes, I think I feel it coming on (if you have ever had it, you know the tingle) but it goes away. I have no words of wisdom, Gina, on how you move on. I do it my own way and I am doing it. My son is gone and nothing changes that. I have a choice, to live with it and go on or....wait a minute, there is no other choice. Love and hugs to you.

You say it like. it IS, and I. appreciate. and need that! Self-pity gets to me, too, and it must be ignored! Life is for the living, we do. integrate the losses as best we can, and time is our ally in this. So sorry about the health problems, too. I live with a lot of them, and often feel sorry. How can we not? it hurts and it\'s impossible to ignore at all. Shocked to death with the news today, stay safe, have a complete recovery, real soon. Love to You, Abby

I think its a good sign that you want to be okay. I was told that shingles was very painful, I don\'t know and scared to find out. Both my parents had it. I believe that this journey we are all on, brings stress and the stress brings sickness of all sorts, even cancer. My x-husband (Jesse & Justin\'s) dad came down with Luekiemia and passed away after loosing our last son. I have been told so many times to take gentle, gentle care of myself and I believe this is why. I have even come down with a strange blood problem Polycythemia after loosing Justin, No one in my family history has this and I to believe it is from the stress of loosing my last son Justin. So please what ever you do, take very gentle care of your self, sleep right and eat right...Wish you peace and good health...XOX, Debbie

Hope you\'re better soon from your current bout with Shingles. You\'re so young to be dealing with that! I thought it only affected people over 60!

Like yours, my comfort zone is at home, too. I wish you & I both were ok & felt like being participants in life again. Guess we have to just keep on trying!

Hugs,

Donna

Oh dear Gina, I sense your innermost feelings and emotions and wisdom in your journal. Yes, we know what we must do to keep moving forward, but it is truly a challenge and takes a lot of strength, persistence and determination (not an easy feat). But I think that even a fraction of this will power and baby steps forward helps us to live the life we want to live with peace, joy and gratitude.

I hope that the shingles are clearing up and also that your counseling session was beneficial.

Love, hugs and peace,
Diane
