Scared in a Small Town
I had something I really wanted to write about today, here, where I feel safe...to get some opinions and advice. Then I opened Facebook and saw a post from 4 years ago that was very, very tender. I reposted it and left a rather lengthy explanation describing what happened and why it meant so much to me. I am in a totally different place now and not even sure if I am going to be able to write the journal I intended to write. I am going to try...but if I am not satisfied with it I will just have to revisit it later.
I love to write. Even if no one reads my entries, it always makes me feel better to get my feelings out and I can express myself so much better in written word. No interruptions, and here I can lay open my heart and soul pretty comfortably.
Writing, actually, is what I want to write about. When I lost Cassi, I was lost. But somehow I knew that if I were going to survive there were going to be a couple of things I had to change about myself...1) I was going to have to get real, immediately. I was going to have to be completely authentic about everything. 2) I was going to experience the pain, all of it, I would not run from it, hide from it, deny it. I knew, for my journey, I had to suffer through it, as long as it took, even if it took forever. I hoped, eventually, it would become a part of me, not all of me. I hoped I would have happy times ahead, and I have, with the sadness just a part of the whole of me.
I started writing a simple blog, nothing fancy, and posting a link to it on my Facebook page. I was surprised by how many views it got in those early days. I have access to the number of views. I got tired of it, and quit writing for a long while, maybe even 2 years, but recently started writing again. I read and follow other blogs and in doing so I have come to realize the changes I felt were imperative were not coming through on my blog. It isn't hard to figure out. I'm scared. I read blogs by other women who boldly tell their truths, their histories, their flaws. What I have found is that I have no interest in being impressed by them, I want to relate to them. When I read something another has written that could have come directly from me, it's absolutely thrilling. I don't admire a perfect home, beautiful, yet probably staged, photos of a perfect life someone wants me to believe they have. I admire the bravery of women who write about the Real. The deep, the dark, the mistakes... I am sure, at some time, they worried about being judged. I am sure they struggled to tell their truths, with kindness, knowing loved ones might be hurt by their words, their perspective.
I WANT to be completely real. I want to expose my flaws, my past mistakes, my present mistakes, but here's the thing. I live in a very small town. A very small southern town. We have churches galore...so many churches. We also have a lot of judgemental people and a lot of nosy people. I'm sorry to say this but it seems in small southern towns like mine an abundance of churches seems to go hand in hand with an abundance of judgement. I have never fit in...I am tolerated because my family goes back generations. I am a progressive Democrat, maybe even a socialist. I feel like there are more than enough resources to go around and all people, in all countries, not just ours, should not have to live in poverty. I don't know all the answers, I just feel like the endless greed of a few should not prevent a poor child from receiving adequate housing, food, medical care. I don't know how it could be done, but I believe it could and it should. As Jesus commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves, you would think the general atmosphere of my church heavy community would be the same, but it's not. It's so far from it I can't help but feel many if not most of the community are hypocrites. When I study the teachings of Jesus, I find compassion, love, charity, forgiveness, humility...others see things quite differently. The election made it all worse, and I am afraid there is no going back. I am afraid future elections will be just as nasty, maybe even worse if that's possible. Everyone who knows me, knows me. I lost a lot of friends over the election. For the really important relationships that were most important between me and others, if we disagreed we found a way to agree to disagree, even if it meant just not discussing the topics, and kept loving each other just the same. But my eyes were opened...issues that I thought had been put to bed are once again causing suffering.
I explain all this so you can understand how serious coming completely clean on my blog is. It is SO VERY IMPORTANT for me to be honest, but I don't know if I am strong enough to handle the blowback exposing myself will bring, not might bring, will bring. I want to write about child loss, grief, suicide...I want to write about how messy life can be and I want someone to read it and say "Me, too" with the same thrill I get when I read my pain in someone else's words.
But people are mean. I have had Cassi's death thrown in my face. Just 2 weeks ago a young woman wrote a post on facebook about needing a suggestion, she needed help but could not afford the $250 it would cost her to see a psychiatrist. She was immediately attacked, by dozens of our God-fearing neighbors...from people making fun of her to accusing her of being a con-artist. A few people came to her defense and when someone suggested taking up a donation to help her I offered to just give her the money outright. I, sadly, know what can happen when a person is in crisis. This brought me to the attention of the attackers. Mostly, I didn't really care, I know what real pain is. Being called a bleeding heart libtard doesn't even register. But one young woman went to my home page and took snap shots and posted them in the thread...I was told I couldn't save my own child, who did I think I was thinking I could help another...and that wasn't even the worst. These are the type of people I would be handing over my personal information to.
Wow...I feel absolutely safe writing all this in this group, however seeing it in black and white...I think I have made my decision. In asking for advice I think I have found the answer myself. I think I should probably keep it vague. I feel like a coward, but I am not yet strong enough to weather the storms that might come my way. But someday I will...someday when I am stronger.
If anyone reads this, makes it through this LONG journal, thanks for listening...or "listening"...you know what I mean.

I hear you. Please don't let the haters stop you from being authentic. tell it like you see it. tell it like you feel it. No, we could not stop what happen to our children, but hopefully if we can prevent another mother from losing her child we can and will.
Hugs and love,
MaryLou
Each community has people like this yet we have to strive to help when we can. This being said, we also have an obligation to ourselves. Truth is truth but we do not have to be beaten up all the time because of it. The social media of our age has good and bad. Try to not do so much on social media, we are safe here I think, other places not so much. Sending you some peace, Gina!! Hugs Kathy
I hear your heart, Gina, and as long as we are in these earth suits there will always be opinions. All that matters is that your writing reflects what is happening for you and if it touches another that's wonderful and if it does not it matters not what they say. I have followed blogs from some of the women that I truly admire such as Liz Gilbert, Brene Brown, Glennon Doyle to name just a few. They have shared that they gave up long ago defending themselves or going into explanation, in fact, they have said that they rarely read anything after they they post and certainly do not respond to those who act "offended" etc. It is something that I have pondered a lot as I journal and write, that I am doing it for ME and that if I can have some release, a moment of clarity that is ALL that matters. How others absorb it is none of my business and I can spend all my energy in defending or trying to clarify and that is just my ego feeling the "dings" and not my spirit.
I hear you and I understand what you are describing and just keep speaking your truth and putting yourself out there as you feel ready to. It matters not how it's received, even if it is at all. What is paramount is that you had something tucked away in your heart and soul that needs expression and you found a way to give it just that... Expression...
Keep saying it like it is in kindness and in LOVE and it's very difficult to argue for LOVE'S sake even though there will always be those who need to level, to challenge and that's okay too. That is their thing and it does not have to BE yours.
Love, light and keep speaking your truth as that is where you healing IS,
XO Joanie
I seldom post anything of a serious nature on face book. People there are too judgemental and don't have a clue what pain we mothers who lost a child feel. I think it is good that writing seems to help you cope. The "haters" who try to challenge your reasons for what you do, are just looking to cause trouble.
If writing a blog helps you to cope with your grief, write it. Don't let these petty women steal your joy.
Gina, I had to take a break from FB or as some of my close friends call it FAKE book! You are so kind hearted and only wanted to help a person in deep need. If others can show no compassion or understanding its a very sad world. Your pure love for Cassi shines through in how much you care for and about others in her memory. Many blessings are wished for you dearest mom.
Hugs, Debbie
Gina,
I'm glad you feel safe writing here; sharing with us. This was Barbara's dream; to create a safe space where hurting moms could pour it all out, the good the bad and the ugly, and be heard, be seen, be understood and be loved.
Being real with yourself and the world is rarely easy. As you mention, there are many fears involved when talking about baring our souls. And most of the time, those fears are from how we expect others to react to our truth, to our rawness. I'm from that same small town with a church on every corner and wonder how there can possibly be enough folks to fill the pews....and now live in an even smaller town, smack dab between two churches on either end of my street. Good folks who mean well, I think, most of the time. But LAWD girl, the tales they've told about me!!! And truth be told, I used to be that judgmental Christian who never missed a service and patted herself on the back for it and judged those around me, inside and outside the church. Not that I thought I was the "perfect" Christian, but I was surely better than some! What a crock of shit that was!!! What a fool I was!!!
I also love to write. I've written my entire life. Not that I ever kept a journal, but I did have at one time a notebook filled with writings and poems. All very dark, very sad, very real and raw. I wrote a paper in high school once where I shared some real feelings, not making the story about me of course, but the character surely WAS me. I didn't even get a grade on the paper, the teacher just wrote across the top "WOW". I never shared anything real again in school. Later I burned the notebook.
I'm so sorry for the rude and ridiculous comments you have received on FB. It's a very fickle forum. So much of what's posted is misleading or out and out lies, and yet people believe it wholeheartedly. I started there....believing. 1. because admittedly, I'm naive, and 2. I couldn't believe so much would be publicly posted if it weren't true. What a dumbass! Now, I pay little attention to "headlines" and news stories and gossip, knowing they are lies 99% of the time and the other 1% they are only half truths. And if I want to add my 2 cents to the conversation I first try to google whether or not it's even a thing, even real. People get all bent out of shape over posts without ever searching to see if any of it is even true. Then feelings get hurt and tempers flare. And YES, I've been guilty more than once!!
After Kala's accident and FMO was started, I noticed some moms where on FB so I tried it out. It was NOT for me! I needed to write, to scream my agony and FB seemed like a place to go play. Which was great for the moms who needed that as an escape or whatever; but I needed to be real, to be honest with all the shit of losing a child, all the shit of my own childhood, all the shit of my life. So, I spent my time here, writing all the dirty little secrets which were my life and I got stronger and stronger and honestly, cared less and less about how things looked on the outside and more about just being real. The real Teri....whatever and whomever she was at any given moment.
But now, for the most part I do enjoy FB. Because it's not where I go to share my deep thoughts, my fears, my very personal life. Those things can only be shared here, or with my closest friends. I've had some difficult situations arise on FB which have left me scratching my head and wondering how in the world did XYZ happen! And, admittedly, I have made posts about things that I should never have posted and have had to go back, delete, make amends, and open my heart and mind more to the vast differences of people's perspective and belief's. I try very hard now to avoid those very touchy subjects. And I'm thankful to say I'm managed to keep 99% of my FB friends.
Whomever said you couldn't save your child so how can you think you could save another is an idiot. No, you couldn't save Cassi.....if you could have, you would have! If any of us could have saved our child we would have!!! You did everything in your power to do just that. But does that mean you never care about another person whom you just may be able to help?? Hell no! We have to care! And you do. I know things like this hurt, deep, but you must be confident in knowing you did everything there was to do for Cassi and you can, will, and do help others, whether you ever see the end result or not. Just by sharing and caring, you are helping. So, don't give another thought to what anyone else has to say on the matter. YOU know the truth.
And I totally agree with you on the issue of there is enough for everyone. I have family and friends who see the worlds issues the same as I do and yet our political "parties" differ. And I have family and friends who see the worlds issues very differently than I do, and we vote most of the time for the same political party. (I have voted both Dem and Rep through the years). We never argue or belittle each other over any of it. Like you, I don't have the answer, I just wish more people cared about more people.
All I can tell you is to keep being you. To keep growing and learning and improving and loving and caring and giving and sharing what is in your heart. And I don't think you're a coward. I think it's smart to know when and where it is safe for you to share yourself with others and when and where it isn't. I changed a LOT after Kala's accident. And one of the biggest changes is how little I really care about what other people think of me, of my life, of my choices. I know where I am and I know where I've come from. I know how hard I've worked to get here, and nothing anyone says or thinks about me can change any of it. I am always open to hearing thoughts and suggestions and helpful critiques of course, but I am not interested in defending myself against anyone. I don't have to, and neither do you. When I screw up, I apologize. When someone else screws up, I forgive. When I can help, I do my best. And when I need help, I ask. This is what I see you doing as well. I try to not offend, and I try to not allow myself to be offended. (doesn't always work out that way, but I do try). And isn't that really all there is to do?
I wish for you the very best as you continue your journey of healing~ Teri
Hi Gina, how dare someone say that to you! You would have moved heaven and earth to save Cassi, just like I would have to save Ed, what all of us moms would have done. How cruel and ignorant of that person!
As a Christian I am appalled at how judgmental, racist, etc some folks who profess to be followers of Christ are. Jesus taught me a long time ago that my job is not to judge but to love. The Bible says, "Judge not lest ye be judged also." I try to, as Teri says, "Teach love."
This site is my safe place. I enjoy FB for keeping in touch with friends that I don't see and I enjoy their pictures etc. But I am careful what I post. I don't think you are a coward if you protect yourself from cruel comments. We moms have enough to deal with. Whatever you decide, I am with you. You are a kind and honest person and should feel free to say whatever you want to say. It's too bad people cannot be more respectful. Love and peace, Linda ♡
Thank you precious Linda; however "TEACH ONLY LOVE" was one of Barbara's messages to us. My Kala contributed "LOVE IS ALL THAT MATTERS".
