Saturday Sept 26
We've been having trouble with the internet, so I haven't been here for a while. I have continued to journal, though, so I have several days' worth to paste.
Things that make me happy: 1. Harvest time; 2. A bath in my walk-in tub; 3. Big blue morning glories
Harvest is here and Don is driving the grain cart for Wayne again. They are harvesting beans on the river bottom west of the house. Wayne’s new cart is equipped with a back-up camera and an adjustable spout, so Don is very pleased. It is hard to believe all the advanced machinery being used compared to what I drove when I worked in the field and drove the grain truck. Everyone uses carts and semi-trucks these days and the combines cut swathes three times wider than the one I operated. We were still farming with Grandpa when we got our first tractor with a cab. Until then, we had an umbrella mounted over the seat to shade us from the sun in the summer; a plastic and canvas contraption called a heat houser that helped shield us from the wind in the winter. During those hot windy days of harvest, we’d be so covered in dust that you couldn’t even see the colors of our clothes – we were just grayish brown forms. We had a homemade shower in the garage which is where we headed when we came in from the field. A barrel on the roof was filled with water which would be warmed by the sun. Oh, it was wonderful to see the dust turn to mud and then be rinsed away. Until you’ve been that dirty, you can’t fully appreciate being clean!
While Don was in the field, I visited with his sister and brother-in-law who were home to attend her class reunion. They were not here for the birthday party last week, so it was fun to catch up on all the news with their family.
I have been able to work for one 30 minute period for the last couple mornings. After that, I’m only good for 15 minutes at a time, sigh. Tomorrow, the dogs and I will go out to the farm while Don is working.
