Sad News

Yesterday my cousin called to let me know his grandma (my aunt) is in the hospital and won't wake up. She is 93 I believe and been battling dementia for years. He said she was so bad the other day she didn't know who he was. Up until now he was the only person she recognized. A few days ago she went to sleep and never woke up. The doctors don't know why, they said they can't find anything wrong with her other than she has been dealing with bad kidneys over the past few months.

I really don't want to be at work. I'm very sad. I keep trying to take my mind off of it. I have my Lasik consultation tomorrow. I don't want my eyes to be screwed up from crying. It's just hard not to think of all the good memories I have of her from childhood and feel a great sense of loss. Dementia is such an awful thing.

It remains yours to sort, Ghost, but I kinda hope you give in to the drive to think of all those good memories. They are the celebration of a long life well loved. With those memories, your great aunt and your cousin's grandmother has earned the honor of a celebrated life. 93 years worth. That is a long enough life to make me wonder if "Old Age" more than enough cause. There comes a time when it is time.

The people I have known who suffered dementia have left me an impression that they are closer to the spirit world than the secular world. It is a greater tragedy for those who are suffering the loss of a loved one than it is for the person living the experience.

But that is enough of the Arf Opine. . .

Steadying support while you sort your own.

Gentile hugs sorry has she passed already or still hanging on in coma?

She hasn't passed yet but I know it's only a matter of time. She isn't on life support, just asleep and won't wake up. She will eventually starve if she can't wake up to eat, and she always ate well and was a good weight.
I told my mom I don't want to go to the hospital. Ive had to watch too many people die as it is. It just brings up bad memories of others dying in front of me when I was young. And it will only get worse. Every time someone dies I think of all the others left to come. I come from 2 huge families and my mom is the youngest so we will likely watch all 11 of her siblings die then it will be her turn. I know that sounds morbid but it's just realistic and it depresses me alot.

Oh how sad!! My grandmother died many years ago and had that. It's like your mind totally goes. My deepest sorrow for you, and I will say a prayer for you to god to give you strength while dealing with this. I always wondered why when it's time for us to go, why we have to go like this, being pained, oblivious, body no longer works, etc.

Rocking you gently and crying with you, Wolf. Some things in life is just plain hard. This is one of 'em.

I heard that people with dementia or alzimers have a part of their minds already in Heaven, just waiting for the rest to come along. I really believe it to be true. I think letting go is hard and different people deal with it in different ways......hugs

Thanks guys. I talked to my cousin. He is meeting with the doctor and case worker now to talk about what to do because her condition hasn't changed. I just feel like I'm going to go thru this with mom soon. Idk if I can ever eat fried chicken or drink sweet tea again without thinking of my aunt. I saw her not too long ago when her son died. I feel like I said goodbye then. She was still home and she knew me.
And I just went to another aunt's funeral like last month. She had dementia too, but I wasn't as close to her.

My mom went to see my aunt Tuesday and actually got her to wake up! My mom talked to her alot and got her to drink and take meds, then grandson came and coaxed her to drink some ensure. Tomorrow is the last day she can stay at the hospital. Mom told her she needed to eat and get her strength back up so she can go home. Mom thinks her sister is just tired and giving up, and mom also says if we tell my aunt she has to go in a nursing home, she will give up. Not sure what her grandson will do but she likely will go home with him. He is taking a week FMLA from work then we will see. Mom is in bad shape herself but she wants to go stay with her sister part of the day to help out. Mom lives the closest out of the other 3 sisters still living. I think it would be good if she did that.
