Roman the security guard
Today I went to the DMV to take my permit test and renew my provisional license, and a security guard told his life's troubles to me. He told me I seem like a good person/listener and that I made his day, and to go to school. I wonder if I have the effect of drawing out people's problems when they see me now? Or maybe he just had a lot on his mind. It didn't take a lot on my part at all for him to start talking after some small talk. I guess when he saw me listening he just kept going. I had to wait an hour after my test to get picked up by my dad, so it got to be develope quite a bit.
If I do have that effect, I don't really mind it. Listening to other people's problems gives me perspective, and getting to know strangers gives me new connections out in the world. Feeling like I'm able to make people feel at ease and listened to is nice. Feeling like people can tell I'm a decent person from a short conversation with me is nice. Feeling that I'm social enough now to get into random conversations with security guards? Also nice. The world is too big to be lost in it alone.
I may write about what he said later. It was a pretty heavy converstaion and I feel like I gained a lot of knowledge listening to it.
