This is the most famous area in South Africa. Should you hear the term Robben Island, your first thought and association is with Madiba (as Nelson Mandela is well known to South Africans). Robben Island is an island in Table Bay and lies about 8 km from Cape Town and actions around 3.4 km by 2 km. The title was given to the area due to the seals (robben could be the Netherlands for seal) that lived here. Geographically, this area used to be the main African continent a long time before.

Holland weren't the very first Europeans to go on this area. This island was visited by the Portuguese a long time ago prior to the English admiral set foot within 1591. In 1601 Joris van Spilbergen (from Netherlands) followed and only in 1652 Jan van Riebeeck got. They tried very hard to build up the fish and seal industry on this area, but because it was so distant, it was used to bar people that had terminal sicknesses and mad people (from 1846 1931). Even individuals who took sheep or cows were restricted to the island, centuries ago.

Throughout the Second World War, the island was used and a light system was built due to the poor stranding report. It had been converted into an exercise camp for that South African Navy after the war ended.

But in 1961 the island was placed directly under the authority of the Department of Justice and was used as a jail. Non of the public was permitted to go there and a protective sea border of around 1.5 km was areas around it. This was the place where previous president Nelson Mandela was sent in 1964 to provide a life sentence. Equipment to start a war in the country was discovered and 10 people altogether were charged.

Because 1997, Robben Island is a public and the general public was allowed back to visit, leaving from the Waterfront in Cape Town.
