Retiring
I'd planned to retire around 80. I'm one of those people who has to stay busy. As a child, I always went to summer school, not because I had to , but because I just couldn't stand hanging around the house all day. I wanted something to do. So, never really had plans to retire early.
Until now.
My job is going. I'm in sales and not making money. It's just a matter of time when I will join the ranks of the unemployed. Only, I won't be unemployed, 'cause when you're in your 50s you can call it retired. Not too happy with the idea. And I think about them pushing the retirement age to 70, only nobodies thinking about who's gonna hire some 50-60 something older person. Ageism starts in your 40s. Companies just aren't interested in hiring people near retirement age. So, you lose your job and you spend months, years looking, finally realizing that you've joined the ranks of the retired.

Know what you mean...when you go in to apply for a job and the boss is young enough to almost be my grandchild (I guess in reality I\'m almost old enough to be the grandma, scary) you can tell they don\'t want some old lady to stare at, they want some young cute chick....guess they don\'t know or think they\'ll ever be old.:.take care and take it easy...hugs, Sandi
Its totally me at the age of 57 years. I just turned 57 on Jan. 11th. I am finding its the age thing but they can\'t say it and just say they found someone more qualified. I don\'t know what to do. My daughter says to apply for disability pension. She says I could use my seizures and depression to qualify for it. I might try. It can\'t hurt and the worst than can do is say no. I would love to be financially able to be retired now. There is so much to do and a person does\'t have to stay home and watch TV. The older generation that is in good physical and mental health can stay active until they are dead. Retirement doesn\'t have to mean boredom. The age here in some place to be qualified as a senior is 55. How about it? I am a senior already and didn\'t know it. All the best to you.
We\'re walking the same path! And what you are saying is true. No one wants to hire old people. It\'s probably worse where I live, Las Vegas. You are supposed to be young, hot, and sporting the appropriate cosmetic enhancements. Meaning breast implants. The bigger the better.
It\'s a big surprise after making a lot of money for years to suddenly find you aren\'t \'qualified\' to do much of anything.
I am quite glad to be retired. Retired five years ago after losing my husband. We were both sixty and had plans on retiring at 62 and traveling. Obviously those plans didn\'t happen! Yeah, you are younger than me and I don\'t know your financial situation, but I do know you have survived the loss of a spouse and many other challenges. Maybe you deserve this time to do what you want and when you want to. Possible??
Is there any way you can start your own business? Anything you like to do that can be done out of your home, or try selling something else? I am not a very good corporate employee, and I am in my 40\'s. If this job ends I hope to be able to have my own business. I know people in their 60\'s that do, and it works out great for them.
