PRE OP APPT DAY
Well, it was for sure a couple days wrapped into one yesterday!! I had to be to hosp by 7:45 for all the preop stuff, left the house (on the bus) at 6:25… had plenty of time as it normally takes about 45 min to get there when I take the bus…. Today, the bus goes a different way (????) and I don’t get there till a few minutes before my apt… after the walk from the station, I was a bit late. Off to a bad start, but still smiling J I had to have fasting labs, so no breakfast (which is a preop protein shake)
Did the little orientation to surgery class and passed the T/F test with flying colors! Then off to see the surgeon. She is sitting at the computer and asks, more to herself than to me… “are you on my hot list?” I responded, “not currently, but I will be in about a year!” She laughed so hard! She said that was the first time she had heard that one!
I was born with a hear murmur. It’s no big deal, just an irregular heartbeat that often doc hear… I knew somewhere in my records it had this info, but as she is listening to my heart, I can see a very slight variation in her face… (you know docs, most are good at keeping a straight face under such situations). She goes over to the computer and is pulling up my heart stress test info (I know she’s thinking something’s up).
So I say, “just a reminder, I have a heart murmur” She s like “you read my mind! How did you know what I was thinking...!” I said, well, I saw it on your face. She told me I was extremely perceptive and how this was such a valuable skill for a therapist and thought I’d make an excellent one. I thought that was soooo cool! J Especially coming from a surgeon!
When I went for my Anesthesiologist appointment I met this really cool RN who I hit it off with so well! IT was cool, we talked about everything from A to Z. She shook my hand at the end and said she had the best time ever visiting with me… and that I’d make an excellent therapist! (Two medical professionals in one day saying I would make a good one was just about over the top for me!)
I ended up having to have blood drawn twice do to labs, blood typing exc. So that was a bummer, I got poked in both arms, once at the anesthesia apt, then once at the lab! Which took forever… By now it is 1 o’clock and I could chew the leg off a chair! LOL!
When this is done, the lab gal fills my shaker cup with cold water so I could make my shake. I head to the bus stop, and sit there drinking my shake, pretty fast cause I am so hungry! By the time I am on the bus and finally heading to school as I still have two classes to attend and give a presentation in one… And feeling like I already put in a day (or maybe twos worth of stuff!) in… My tummy starts hurting… Like BAD!! I know I am going to be in trouble… I have to poo! Like NOW! I cannot go home, I have finals, and presentations to give! All I could think of is I would be giving my presentation with poopy pants cause I was getting scared, and my tummy was so unhappy, that I would not make it to find a restroom!
Finally we get to the college, and luckily I manage to run (ok, for me, walk real fast!) to the nearest restroom!! I was so relived in more ways than one! Ha! That I didn’t have to figure out how to recover from a mess in my pants! I had even considered that I might have to go to the University Duck Store and see if I could find a pair of sweat pants or something I could wear! LOL!
All in all, it was one of the fullest days I’ve had in a LONG Time!! And word of caution, be careful of drinking those protein shakes on an empty tummy! Maybe it was just a fluke, but I tell you, I had to stay near the restroom the rest of the day! LOL! LOL!
Ended the day ,,,, still smiling! J
