Poll Worker Training

Today I had training to be a poll worker. It was about a 3 hour class and wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. It was a lot of information, but I have my book to go through if I have any problems. Basically it boiled down to "If you need help, ask the Clerk". If something unplanned happens, call the clerk, etc. The thing that sucks the most is that I have to be there at 5:30 am. I should be able to get a ride with my boss who is also going to be working there. If I need to leave early, then Geo can come pick me up or I can take the bus home. I don't think that's going to be a problem, though. I'm just going to have my energy drinks and coffee. I might even be able to bring my coffee maker with me. It's small, only does 4 cups at a time, but it's better than nothing. I was also thinking about getting those "5 hour energy" drinks. I will have to get one the next time I'm at the store to try it out. The last thing I want to do is drive myself manic. I know I'm going to have trouble sleeping that night since I will have been up all day and the more tired I am the harder it is to fall asleep. But I'm getting paid, and that's the important part to me. Don't get me wrong, I like helping people, but I could really use the extra income. It's not enough for my SSDI to be effected. I will take the next couple of days recovering from the lack of sleep and high activity level. But I know I can do it!

Larissa you have such a great positive attitude about it all! Im not sure on all the rule for making alittle extra income but sounds like you have checked it out with the social security office and it sounds like its only a temporary job not gonna be on going. I would be careful about taking one of those 5 hour energy things i have heard they are so dangerous :( I just dont want it to mess you up and then you get sick from drinking it. My son drank those energy drinks ... not the 5 hour one but the other kind... and he got horrible stomach pains and bad headache from it. Just be careful... dont want anything bad to happen. HugggzZz

how great to do what you are doing. it is an early start but I know you can do it, you have shown time and again your strength. I also would be very careful about those energy drinks, I have heard many bad side effects and I don\'t want you to get sick or manic over it. maybe just sticking to coffe would be enough. how long are you there? hugsss

I\'m going to be there from at least 5:30 am until at least 7:30 pm, but that\'s if I get out early. It could be as late as 10 pm. That\'s why I would need the energy drinks. I may be down and out for a couple of days, but after that I should be back to normal.

best of luck and it will probably be a lot of fun and interesting. how long is the job for? my friend\'s mother used to work the polls for all the elections but i don\'t remember what her position was. i think she was in charge of something, i know it was her main job after she had children - she did that and was a girl scout leader for 15 years and very proud of that (and should be) now that i\'m older i\'m like, wow, all those little kids for all those years. they are desparate for girl scout leaders in the inner cities, because without it the kids have nothing positive to follow at all. she did the 9 - 12 bunch of girls \"juniors\" and a little bit of cadettes, which is 12 - 14, but its more active at 9 - 12 - with all the badges etc., and even did the camping end of it, which shocked me. you\'d never guess it with someone like her, i\'d have guessed office work only.

i had to be in when the banks fell 3 years ago and we were being re-trained. i was going in at 6:30 so leaving at 5:30 and i hated it, but it has its perks. you see the sun rise. its very quiet. no traffic. but i hated it and couldn\'t wait for that year to be over. hope it never happens to me again. lol. i said to my boss, i haven\'t been up this early in the morning since 9th grade. lol. even when i fly places i always fly in the evening or close to it, why ruin an entire day?

make sure you take TWO dinner breaks, 30 minutes each and three dinner breaks if its longer. so many people wipe out on long shifts and its because they aren\'t taking enough breaks. you will NEED the rest and the get away from it kind of thing. don\'t forget a few ten minute or fifteen minute breaks as well. xxoo

Sounds like a very long day. Don\' t forget to eat some solid food that will help keep your energy up too. 38lb is right. don\'t forget you are going to be there more than 12 hours. you need 3 meal breaks and 2 15 min breaks. even if you just put your feet up for a bit and relax. What will you have to do for the day? I bet you will be great at it. Enjoy the day.
