Phew, I made it through the weekend
Well, I am feeling very proud of myself today as I negotiated a few hurdles over the past 3 days and managed to stay stoically sober and on track. The first hurdle was telling my partner I was 'on the wagon' and would not be drinking even though we were away on holiday for the weekend (we would normally enjoy a big drinking sessions together) - that was a biggie but I felt confident about telling him and he made a couple of jokes about it but nothing too major. The second was going to the pub with him later and ordering a non-alcholic drink. As I stood there in the pub i noticed one of my (previously) favourite drinks and felt myself weaken as I imagined the taste in my mouth. I wavered, realizing it was make or break time. I made the decision to get out of the pub quickly and told my partner I was going to get us a table outside. Blimey, that was close! The next hurdle was going to a food and drink festival the following day and again managing to resist the alcoholic delights on sale. My partner offered me a (previously enjoyed) cider which I instantly turned down but then found it on my brain, feeling tempted by the crisp flavour and keen to join the masses around me in various stages of intoxication. I quickly found another stall and brought myself an iced chocolate drink (even though i try to avoid dairy this was most definately the lesser of 2 evils!) I then went on to enjoy watching the antics of heavily intoxicated people and just felt sorry for them more than anything, with just a hint of sadness that I would never be doing that again. It felt unusual staying sober throughout the weekends holiday but I totally love the feeling of waking up early in the morning with a clear head. I was up and out walking around the most beautiful lake whilst most other people were trying to sleep off their hangovers and I enjoyed and can remember every last minute of my time away so my weekend seemed longer than usual. I noticed that despite my partner not being that supportive of me not drinking (he is an alcoholic himself), he actually drank less himself and didn't overdo it so enjoyed driving classic car which he has just spent years getting back on the road.
