People trapped & Baby drowned...
OMG I cannot believe how BAD the remnants of this Hurricane Ida is here in NYC. 12 people died here, and not far from me at all, in my borough!! All were trapped in their basement apartments and drowned, including a 2 year old baby.
They were all trapped and drowned, as they could not open the doors to get out since the surging water prevented them from opening their doors to get out. We got 7 & 1/2 inches of rain in one night, subways, buses and railroads all were flooded, so many were not even running today. The pictures are out of a horror movie.
So many people here in live Basement apartments because there is nothing at all affordable. AND basement apartments here, all are illegal because majority of them don't have heat or are prone to problems like flooding. Yet a basement apartment here is also a small fortune.
My sister's neighbor got flooded out, her basement and garage are kaput. I feel so bad for her and all the people who died and the people in Louisiana. Yes people out there have it far worse than most of us do. I have to be grateful today that me and my daughter are o.k. Prayers for everyone affected!

It was so bad here it makes me want to cry.
I know it's very sad that so many people died or got flooded out of their home but I'm glad that you and your daughter are safe!! Glad you live on the 3rd floor!! It was bad here too but we got lucky, just a little water in basement!!

So sorry you guys got hit so hard. We were on the edge of the storm and didn't get hit to badly. My sister lives in Philly area and the had a tornado go through. Lots of trees down but thank God their house is all right. We had about an inch of water in our basement was all. It went down the drain once it stopped raining. We have a spring in our basement that overflows and floods our basement when we get a lot of rain. It was definitely a terrible storm and my heart goes out to all affected.
