ONLY TWO MORE DAYS!!!

Friday, 1-2-09:  Aargh!!  Only two more days off!  I am not ready!  I still have a lot of sleep to catch up on!   Seriously, I am blessed to have a job.  I know that.  There are so many people I know, and many on this site, that are struggling, have lost a job, are going to lose a job, or who have had trouble finding one in the first place.  Still, I have, if not enjoyed my time off, needed it.  I have slept A LOT!  I am still not exactly what I would call healthy. However, I have been reading a book by Catherine M. Sanders.  It is called How to Survive the Loss of a Child.  She is a bereaved parent, also.  I am sure I looked at this book earlier on but it didn't really register with me, then.  Now, is another story.  In one chapter she talks about the phases of the grieving parent.  As we all know it is quite different than "normal" grief.  Anyway, the phase I believe I am in, is three.  As I read it I kept thinking, "Well, this is just me."  Some of the characteristics are withdrawal, despair, fatigue, hibernation, and weakened immune system.  Although most of us have had these characteristics all along, for me, this is different.  It has validated where I am right now.  It doesn't make me any healthier but it does validate.   For example, she states, "The body has used up vast quantities of emotional and physical energy and is now without proper defenses.  The energy of the first two phases is gone.  There is a need to sleep a lot and give in to the fatigue.  After near exhaustion of the preceding phases, the need is to pull back and conserve what little strength is left until rest can restore former energy.  The death becomes more real." I really recommend this book.  It has taken me a little over eighteen months to get to this place. The author also suggests this is a positive phase and not a negative one.  I think, for me, in essance, I finally hit rock bottom and am now fighting to get back up for more of my journey.  The rest of the journey will not be easy, I am sure.  I do think it will be less intense.  I am sure I will still have those gut wrenching, falling apart, crazy moments. In fact, I had a "small" moment yesterday.  But, I know, already, they don't come as often.   And, they are not usually not as long or as strong.  I still have a lot of work to do.  No doubt! I am sad to be "meeting" so many new members on the site.  I am glad though, since they are walking this awful journey, they have found us.  I hope I can help them in the way so many have helped me.

Wish your break could be longer! I\'ve been thinking about reading some books or something. I tried to in the beginning, but that did not work out so good. I guess it was too soon. Maybe now would be different. Enjoy your next two days!!Billye

I think you are progressing normally...I can see that you are searching for a peace and that you are wanting to help others that are on this same journey. That is wonderful...continue to rest when you can and know that we will continue on hand in hand...love to you...Karen

I\'m sorry you have to go back to work. I\'m in the same boat. I\'ve had several days off and still want more (lol). I too am fortunate to have a job so I go. That book sounds interesting. I will write it on my list. I have been reading off and on for the past year a book titled, \"The Grieving Garden\". It is several parents who have lost children from all ages and all walks of life who share their thoughts and experiences. It too is interesting and has helped me. Check it out. I wish you a kinder and gentler 2009. Love to you friend. Robin

I think that alot of my problems stem from the fact that I have had multiple losses. So I am in more than one stage or in mixed stages. Have you read anything about that? I wonder if this is addressed somewhere. I\'d sure like to know. I do know that their are deffinite stages. I have experenced that with my first son\'s death. Then with more losses added to that the stagess became all mucked up. Love Peg

I hope you find the energy you need to go back to work and enjoy being with those wonderful kids. They sure take a lot of energy, I know! But the rewards are worth it. Look after yourself though and take time off it and when you need it! Charlotte. xoxox

I have read this also, and you are right, you have to reread it at the right time for it truly to sink in,..it\'s like you have to experience each stage first! I think you should be kind to yourself and get as much rest as you can, maybe even a mini-nap after or before dinner,--just to rest, put your feet up. for myself, I have a lot of physical problems that are draining, too, so I am always tired! I truly think you are beginning to heal, that doesn\'t mean you won\'t have \"meltdowns\" but that you will be better able to deal with them. There will always be tears, there will always be that hole in our heart! Love, Judy

I have read that book. It was such a relief to not I was \"normal\" sort of... I believe we are at about the same place in our grief. I\'m dreading going back to work too. It\'s been very nice to be able to keep my own schedule. Sending you love and hugs, Cyn

I have read this book. It was several months ago. in the beginning I bought all the books about grief and losing a child I could get my hands on. I was addicted. I think it would be a good idea for me to get some of them back out and read parts of them again. I probably missed some good points along the way. I hope you are feeling better. I go through spells where I sleep alot. Our body needs it. I think that is when our souls are trying to heal from the shock of our loss.
Take care, Kelly

I have been reading and reading for the past couple of months too. It does help. Right now, I am reading \"The Shack\". It\'s fiction, but still must have been written by someone \"who knows\". It gives you a peaceful feeling of what heaven must be like. Reading all of your comments makes me feel \"normal\" too. It\'s such a roller coaster! One day I\'m totally up and the next day I can be in a dark, dark place. It is a very scary roller coaster to be on. That\'s why I\'m so glad I found this website. It is helpful to hear you say that the down times are farther apart, and less intense. Take care of yourself and get lots of rest. I have found that exercising helps me too (when I have the energy to do it).

Sounds like a good book, going to pick it up. For sure our immune systems suffer and so do we. Sorry about work but the options aren\'t good if you don\'t work. How do you feel about eating?? lol Love and hugs Cathy
