Newly Diagnosed
I had my initial assessment with the Diabetic Educator this morning after being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 3 weeks ago. When I was first diagnosed, I was angry but have come to see this as a blessing in which positive change is possible! I am also about 90 pounds overweight. It was an hour and she went over a little bit about diabetes, provided me with my first meter, tested my sugar with the meter, took my blood pressure and went over my meal plan. Evidently my first 3 weeks of making changes have already helped. My blood pressure was down, I lost 6 pounds and my fasting blood sugar was 133 which was considerably lower than 3 weeks ago when it was 165. Yay! I am highly motivated and hope I won’t have to go on any medication. I have asked my doctor to give me 3 months to improve first. I have an all day diabetic class that my husband is going to go with me to on Monday. That should be interesting. I think I better understand now how my sister was able to make the drastic changes she did when she was diagnosed 5 years ago. It is a really scary disease and my sister is my inspiration that I can do this. The first week I went off sugar I was a real B*****. But by now I’m feeling clearer and have a lot more energy. I hope I can continue to stay motivated because this really feels good and I know my blood pressure and blood sugar will be much better.
I bought a recombinent bike 3 weeks ago and the first week I could only do a couple of minutes. During week 2, I was able to do 7 minutes. This week I am up to 8 minutes and I'm committed to 5 days a week. I'm working towards 30 minutes 5 days a week by adding 1 minute a week.
I'm glad I found this support group! Linda
