My Gambling Testimony
MY GAMBLING TESTIMONYHello people, How did I stop gambling and stay stopped . I dont know, it just happened. My story is no diferent to anybody else,s who has this ongoing emotional and mental disorder of being addicted to gambling.I felt there would be no hope of me, ever, to give up gambling. Over the years I tried everything to stop. Gave up my job in a club, attending meetings, used strategies i was given, no access to keycards and credit cards, phoning friends of GA and AA (no meetings here for GA) So I attended meetings at AA for 12+ years. Nothing worked because I hadnt let it! Honesty with myself was sadly lacking and being in denial, kept leading me to relapse after relapse, which only set me back more and more, so the helplessness that I experienced, became part of my miserable life.In September of 97 I attempted suicide but I was saved by an inuitive friend, where I was staying. I had decided after another miserable night out gambling, that I had had enough and this was the best thing I could do for everyone. Consequently this lead to my first attempt at a proffesional, clinical approach to rehabilitation, a programme at Flinders Medical Centre, South Australia. Three weeks later, after a new form of approach to therapy, developed by Professor Isaccs a UK dimentia specialist, I was an out patient, and had a wonderful therapist. Yet again I started to gamble the money I,de saved by being in hospital. Always on poker machines, rarely did I gamble on horses or cards.... no interest. In 1998 in January I had a car accident that left me feeling very lucky to be alive, and although I didnt really have a life that I felt was worth living I survied. My gambling had eaten into 3 of my familys bank accounts, and my addiction had eaten into my brain. So much so that I beacmae more submerged in alcohol, drugs and denied mysef most things people take for granted. Food, paying bills, and respect of my family, finally diminished. All but my Aunt disowned me, leaving me with almost no support except her. My thinking was distorted, I ignored my health and even on crutches after my accident I still continued gamble. The drugs and alcohol were to numb and dull the effects of gambling. Within the next 2 years I was evicted from my home, sold my car for a rediculous price and created an impregnable road away from my family, again, except for my Aunt. One of the emotional lies I used to tell myself was that someone else could always fix my gambling debts and give me more money to keep on gambling. Till finally the wells ran dry. My mother died in october 1999 and I was evicted from my home in December 31st 1999.welcome to the year 2000.. It had absolutely had no meaning for me.I still had nowhere to go as i was too out of it to do such complicated things, like find another place to live.I was supposed to inherit my mothers house but owing to also going bankrupt in 1999 as well, my sister,s took charge of the estate and i lost it. Consequently because of my attitude, and blindness to the real cause of my situation, I fought with my 2 sisters for my mothers house believing it to be mine. 48 hours prior to my being evicted they finally agreed to rent mums house (as they bought it), to me. I lived in it for 12 months and my sister asked me to leave wanting the house for one of her daughters. I wasnt paying rent on time, if at all and I was angry most of the time if I saw my sister and any of my family. I decided that my only option I could see then, was to live with my aging aunt.I was able to store my stuff next door in a neighbors shed next to my aunt, so for the while I was ok.My gambling and dependecy did not relent. There was some change in my gambling habit, and my drinking and drugging stopped for long enough to became somewhat clearer about what i had to do. I had heard of another rehab centre in Sydney called Odyssey House. They too had gambling rehab programmes, so in desperation, I decided to give it a go. I had nothing to lose.It was then, December 2001, after 12 mnths with my Aunt, left for Odyssey House. It was a gruelling time, but mixing with people who were recovering from all 3 addictions, (me included) I felt like i wasn't alone anymore and could identify with the residents as just normal pple with complicated problems, like me. Leaving Odyssey House I returned home for the last time in June 2002. I spent the next 3 years or so, like a hermit. Keeping to myself and living in my room for up to 14 hours a day just surfacing for meals at my Aunts. Once a fornight I would sneak out with an excuse and go to the clubs to gamble on pension day.Living this non exitantant hermits life, drugs and alcohol soon found their way back into my miserable life.Over the next few year I gradually started to come to terms with my life and my gambling started to subside. Not totally but I was beginning to see a light. In feb 2004, hope came in the way of the house next door to my Aunt's place where I'd stored my belongings in thier shed.... it came up for rent. I thought it was a god send but how on earth could I afford it. I just knew that I had to get out of my Aunts place as it and she and her cat were driving me bananas..... literally! So I applied for the house from the real estate office, and got it. I did have a job too, but after 4 weeks, tossed it in. I was not yet ready to handle real money, as it was another part of the process I had to learn, and am still learning it today. The real value of money meant nothing to me in the past, but I have clawed and struggled my way back, and finally found a peace that at 58 means more to me than money. I take each day as it comes, gamble free, and know that my higher power has been with me all along just waiting to gently make me feel whole again. All i had to do was stop. Like I said at the beginning, I dont know how I stopped, it was a combination of everthing, that finally added up in my life. My wonderful life now, where I pay bills on time, budget money, have money leftover and appreciate the simple things in my life. If I was to say anything about how I stopped.. I stopped searching for the big win and transformed my obsession of trying to attain money gambling, by just letting it go, and letting my higher power in to guide me to the luck of each day. Not the luck of gambling. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. May the same Higher Power enter and guide and heal, those who allow it to. Peace and blessings to all fellow recovering Gamblers and those, who are searching for help. Yours in faith,Vincent 13 xoxox(PS:This was my story up until 2005 I started having relapses last december of 08 and have been on shakey ground since then. I am feeling each day out as it comes now, and knew I needed to get help. Finally was lead to here. I have my inner peace back again, after reading others posts and journals have some degree of sanity back.I still feel vulnerable and under attack some days, but thats to be expected in recovery.I know my feelings towards gambling will subside now, and I know I can deal with the demons on a daily basis, the same way that kept me free before I busted.Thanx again for all your support and welcoming into the group.TC Yours In FaithVincent13 xoxox(Its been a week this friday since I last gambled.)

What a powerful story Vincent, I\'m so glad you found this site and so am I. There are wonderful people here who understand they have been there. This site has helped me more than I can say. Just remember one day at a time. Take Care
Steph
You should post that on the discussion board...WOW...you\'re seriously a very good writer, it felt like I was on your journey with you. And like Steph said, what a powerful story! We need a Testimony board. Mine is different from yours, they all are, still we relate. We are not alone in this struggle, unless we want to be. I don\'t want to be, I was so grateful to realize I\'m not alone. We\'re not alone. If we can learn to put one foot in front of the other, we can learn to live one day at a time. Not only live it, but love it. Thank you so much for sharing your testimony, we\'re all here, for you because we need you. Prayers to my Higher Power for you, Robin
Thanks for sharing.
A very powerful journal we can all learn from.

Still struggling.
Its been 5 months since i busted and have stopped drinking & drugging for 27 days, but I,ve been gambling at every bored moment Ive had, during that 5 months... unable/unwilling, to not give in.
I know excuses are not acceptable but the reasons i can see that were setting me off were the same as they were when I was in manic, compulsive, pathological gambling states. THe 5 years means nothing, time means nothing to the emotions.
Mine have returned with a vengeance.
Ive finally reached the end of my supply of money. Bank account zilch, credit card zilch, till pay day. I do have acces to other pples money tho,and damn...thats bad atm.BUt I can make it good as I still feel I have some degree of integrity to draw upon. I had to stop myself from asking for money after losing yesterday as I could have quite easy got it.
I do have everything I need tillpayday and 40 bucks in vouchers from the clubs points ive earned while gambling, for grocerys, petrol etc and all my bills are up to date.
I had to have the brakes replaced on my car tuesday, which was $264.oo, and that was the trigger, trying to get that money back. So thats that.
Where to from here, how I willl fare, I dunno. All i know is, I gotta go to the same damn club today with my family for lunch and pretend or not give my self away to them, but as I know, its dangerous to my psyche and subconious later to even be around clubs and \'poker machines\' (Slot machines).
I wont lie to them, but if they dont ask I\'m not telling.
Its the only time I can get to see my sister while she is in town, she said last night on the phone. Double whammy. I may not go. Just may say hello and get to hell home after dropping off my Aunt.
I have workmen here doing insulation in the roof, so i did mention I may not be able to get away for lunch.... how convenient I thought.
So todays the 21st May
I last gambled yesterday.
Today I will not gamble.

Vincent, this is a terrible disease of the mind, I know I have it. I wish I could tell you how to stop ,but there is no easy answers, this site has helped me. When the urges get so strong I come here, sometimes it helps. I just talk to myself and it\'s hard. We have all dug a deep hole for ourselfs, thats why we are here. It\'s good to be in contact with other people who understand. Reach out the people here care. Take care of yourself.
Steph
THanx Steph I cant thank you pesonally enough for your suppport and concern. I feel it from you, very much.
My day became chaotic after the workmen smelt a gas bottle leak from my LPG gas supply.
I was horrified to say the least,as I smoke not to mention the 110 dollars of wasted gass I will be billed for apparently.
So in amongst my madness and dilemma yesterday. my HP was there, keeping me from the club and gambling.
I had to laff as well as feel so blessed to know that I havnt deserted my HP. Its always there and even in chaos and disruption I felt an inner peace yesterday.
To say I was thankful for the events would be an understatement I was just as tickled pink after looking back over the days events too.
Spent a lot of time panicking over nothing, but thats a trait I have had for years as a gambler, at least, the very least, I started to feel connected again... a handle of hope.
Joy! Joy! Joy!

Way to go Vincent, 32 days straight, Is it easier to stay Gamble Free when you are not Drinking or smoking? With me it\'s the mental part of the urges and the addiction. This is such a damaging addiction. Some times I think one day I will be able to gamble like a normanl person but I know fooling my self. At least thats a small break thru. It\'s a battle everyday. Well I wish both of us sucess.
Take Care Steph
THree days of depression, missed a sunday roast pork dinner, just couldnt be around anyone.
Had to leave class today early, same story I dont know whats going on atm... up n down daily.
MAy have to go back on anti depressants after doing a checklist to evaluate the sypmtoms of anxiety n depression.
I,m funtioning ok in between bouts of it , think i,m ok then everything changes.
Seeing my doctor thursday but he,s not much use, he will only offer me meds.
Back to sleeping 2 hours at a time again at night. Waking up cranky in the morning.
JUst wish my moods would stabilise.
I feel the gambling has opened all this past stuff.
Mood swings and feelings of anxiety and cant relax.
Damn !!!!
At least i,m sober n clean 32 days.
Back up again. Feeling ok. Quit smoking today.
Boy.... somethings got a hold of me, and I aint letting go.
My mate was saying about when you tell pple things, they rememeber em. So if ya bust or break, like start to drink or smoke or gamble again, its like being a liar.
Thank goodness pples opinions dont work like that on me when ive busted. Sure I feel like a criminal when Ive got busted busting, but I guess iv\'e grown up a bit over the years. JUst judge myself these days.
Hope i can communicate with my doctor ok tomorrow. Havnt seen him all year as I changed docs. Now I have a car, I can see my old one again.
Here\'s hoping I can get some proper answers n treatment.
Hi Vincent,
I\'ve often wondered, what came first, the chicken or the egg? I\'ve suffered from depression for so long. I\'m on meds now, again. They help. I took them for over 15 yrs before I decided to stop on my own, not a real good idea. That was approx 5 yrs ago, so I was off my meds for about 4 yrs. I was miserable, but I\'m pretty good at hiding it, I guess? One of the big reasons I quit my meds on my own, was because my dr just kept trying to change the meds I was on! Something inside me believed the meds had done all the good they could for me, and then sort of turned against me. I thought that\'s why my gambling was so out of control! Maybe they had something to do with it, maybe they didn\'t, who knows? But I\'m back on them, again, and have been for about 8-10 months, and like I said, they\'re helping. Not a cure for anything, really. Know what I mean? They, more or less, just help to balance me out. Yes, I\'m addicted to gambling, but I just don\'t want to do it anymore. Not cured. I\'m so sick and tired of being my own worst enemy, and not liking myself, hurting myself. I know one thing for sure, gambling hurts me. I just don\'t want to do it anymore, it hurts. I couldn\'t care less if I ever win any amt of money, ever! It was never about winning, for me, anyway. It was self punishment! At least in my case that\'s what I\'m beginning to realize. I go for a stupid stress test today, ugggg..not looking forward to it! But I must. One day at a time. I sort of understand what you\'re going through, I don\'t want to pretend like I have any answers or advice. Not today. I\'ll I can do is share my pain with you, in an attempt to help you realize, you are not alone. Oh yeah, I quit smoking for flippin\' 8 months...and started again! I could just scream, cover you ears!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... Keep reading and writing...so many good people here to listen....Stressed out HUGS lol a little
You are stronger than me, first drinking, drugs, gambling and now smoking. Vincent I admire you for trying, you have guts. I hope the doctor can help you, life is to short to go thru all of this and to be depressed on top of everything. You know we are here when you need us. Take Care Steph
THanx Moyer and Steph.Things and pple are registering again.
You know, the best help I get, is from when pple are sharing their stories. Be it their pain, or their joys, both are inspirational along with the highs and lows, accomplishments or dissapointments. All give me a lift as well as an internal \'greatful\' feeling, that pple really do understand us on here and care, responding \'as if\'they were walking the same pathway. ( We are! )
JUst different scenery, enviroment, and pple.
Somedays I wish I was exagerating and life was just a made up fantasy to play with. It would be so much easier if we didnt have to take it so seriously some days.
The illusion of creating an outcome with no real basis or care for a favorable outcome....just faith n speculation and optimism that a kind universe will address our pain and fortune.
There lies my basis for the continuation of my gamblng.
I used to think how could god let me down how could my judgment be be so impared as to pick the wrong machine, the wrong KENO numbers or horse as the case may be, and lose.
The beating up on my self and feeling the despair of knowing the fruitlessness of my efforts, once i,m on the binge should have been ebnough for a sensible person to just QUIT. Talk about runnning a mental marathon of hope and daring. lol
Gambling left me totally exausted on all planes. Physically spiritually, mentally and emotionally, and yet, WE GO BACK TO DO THIS ALL OVER AGAIN ???
Boy... need I say any more to my self ?
So thanx again hope my words have made some good sense today.
Its early morning and i,m halfway awake hehe.
