MIL Drama Again
So it's Joey's birthday today. So as is tradition, his best friend and his dad took him golfing on the Sunday prior. And that just happened to be Mother's Day. I worked until 5pm and he was supossed to be done by around 3pm. No problem.
But then he texts me at work to tell me they are going again. 36 holes. So I'm upset, but there isn't anything I can do about it. I'm stuck at work, Marlow is at his mom's, and he is across the city.
So after work I walk the few blocks to his mom's. Get there, and discover that nobody bothered to phone her and tell her they were going again. So she had prepared supper for both Joey and his dad, plus, she had been watching Marlow longer then planned. I totally get that she was upset. Though she acted like it was no big deal.
I told her that I though it was irresponsible for Joey or Dave not to phone her, and irresponsible of Joey for just dumping Marlow and taking for granted that she would watch her for that long. Ecspecially on Mother's Day. She then told me that it was fine. Being a mother had to be done, so mom's didn't deserve praise, you signed up for it, so Mother's Day is a bogus holiday. A mother should never ever expect a thankyou. Um. Ok. But I was still pretty damn mad.
So supper comes up, and we had steak, bbqed potatoes, beans and pickles. Marlow hates meat. I don't force it on her. I can get her to eat hotdogs, and occasionally burgers. Other then that she eats tofu at home. So I cut her up some potatoes and beans. Put them in a bowl and put them on her tray. After every five bites she was allowed a pickle(she would eat only pickles if I let her). So she finishes her bowl and about six pickles. Then I put some more in her bowl just in case she wants more. My MIL comes in from the living room(where she was eating, not enough room in the kitchen, I was eating standing at the counter) and sees Marlow's full bowl.
She grabs the bowl and says "oh Pumpkin, mommy is letting you go hungry so she can eat? That's not nice is it??" I spoke up, I told her that was Marlow's second bowl, and that she had eaten alot of pickles. That if she chose not to eat this she was full. But Jane is a strong believer that you should stuff a kid to the breaking point. She proceeded to ignore me, then mash everything in Mar's bowl into a pile of mush and try and force feed her. Marlow was getting mad and hitting at the spoon. She is going to be 2 this summer. SHE CAN FEED HERSELF! Jane still purees her food if she has a chance before I get to it! So after a few moments of her trying to shove the spoon of goop into my daughter's mouth I walked over, took the bowl out of her hands, and told her Marlow had had enough. Jane looks at Marlow and says "When you are hungry in ten minutes you come find Grandma."
Now here I should mention that since Joey was originally meant to come get me from work I had no way out of there until he showed up. I was marooned at my MIL's!
So after supper all the kids(my SIL's four kids too, ages 3-8) were playing with these blocks. And then they were done and I told Marlow it was time to clean up. My MIL says "oh no, I'll do it. Or the older kids can." So I grit my teeth and ask her if Marlow played with the blocks, she says yes, so I inform her then Marlow can help clean up the blocks. But in the end the kids started playing again, so we left them. The oldest boy was trying to build something, there were plenty of other blocks, but Marlow kept running ot him and grabbing the blocks off of his creation and breaking it. He was getting upset. And I get that. But my MIL told him to stop crying and give Marlow the toys he had!!! I was like WHAT? She told him that Marlow is just a baby and doesn't know any better. How is she going to learn any better if you make the older kids give her their toys? And talk about resentment between cousins!!! I told her that Marlow had to lean she couldn't take whatever she wanted. But by then the boy, in tears, had dropped his blocks and went to go cry alone. I felt terrible.
In the end, Marlow was the only kid to clean up the blocks. The two girls helped when there were a few left, but Marlow cleaned. Plus, she was scolded for taking the boys blocks, and we went and found him and she gave him a hug and said sorry for breaking.
By the time Joey showed up(with his tail between his legs I may add) it was 830pm. I was on edge, dissapointed that he did what he did, and so livid at the way my MIL was acting that I felt like slugging him.
On the plus side, I got a nice long back rub and lots of sucking up for that and the day after. He's never taken out the garbage without asking before! And he mowed the lawn yesterday before even coming inside when he got home from work. Plus he brough home cinnamon buns as a treat. But today is his birthday, so now it's my turn to dote! :)
