Marking Time
Dear Fred:
I thought I was once again getting on top of things. Then the bottom fell out of whatever it was that I was "on top" of. It wasn't a soft landing either!!
Once again I am climbing out of where ever I went. I have now volunteered to help one of the humane societies in our area. I haven't been contacted yet but I will be pro-active and call them if I don't hear back in a few more days. Even though I have 5 cats at home I am sure I can pet & cuddle a few more while trying for find them homes.
The volunteer work with Hands of Hope Hospice is progressing. It's going slowly but next week should see some steps forward. It will be good to actually be doing volunteer work instead of just being on hold waiting for training. I guess it will all come in time.
The support group Tamara & I have started is still very small. However, Tamara is feeling a little more comfortable with getting new members and can now see why we need a larger group. I hope the group will hold together and grow. I am sure it can do a lot of good for those who are widowed and for the community as a whole. At least I was able to find a Social Worker who would work with the group and a hospice agency that will back it up. If they will allow me to, I have some ideas as to how to get the word out to other widows & widowers in our area who do not know about the group. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I have also joined a book club that meets once a month. Hopefully that will also give me a healthy social outlet. I have only attended once but the women there were all very nice and we had a good visit after the meeting ended.
The problem is, no matter what I try I always feel deflated or let down once I have participated. The hollow empty lonely feelings still seem to fill my entire insides. I am told if I keep trying different things "in time" it will feel better. I do hope this is true. Everyone tells me I am doing great, looking good, etc etc. Perhaps I am. I've never been widowed before. To me it all seems like "surface progress". Yes, I am joining things now, my hair is washed, I get dressed and before I leave the house put on my "happy face" that hangs by the door. Inside things still feel very much the same as they did a year ago.
I have the ability to keep fairly busy and do so. However, the fact that my life with Nick is gone forever still leaves me devastated. I want to go hiking in the red rock country of Moab.... not be reading a biography of Queen Elizabeth. I want to be pouring 2 cups of coffee in the mornings... not just one. I want to feel the need and purpose to clean house, buy groceries and even cook... instead of knowing that it no longer matters if these things are done or not. I want to be watching one of our favorite television shows, holding hands with Nick, .... instead of playing a silly computer game all by myself at night. I want to be able to sit and listen to Nick talk on and on about his computer programming until my eyes glaze over...... instead of listening to a CD on Positive Thinking.
A few weeks ago, a friend told me that when she had heard Nick's cancer had returned she felt jealous of me. She said she was jealous because she knew Nick was going to die and then I would be "free". I have not seen her since that lunch. What she doesn't understand about "freedom" is very clearly defined in the old song, "Me & Bobby McGee". The line in that song that says "Freedom's just another word for nothing else to lose." really sums it all up.
If what life is now is my "new normal" (and I am NOT referring to the Activia commercials with Jamie Lee Curtis).... if the is my "new normal" I am afraid I do not like it very much at all. It does not feel like actually living life at all. It is just marking time.

Darlene,
I loved reading this journal. it is honest, and the only people would really understand this is us!!! And my dear I got eaxch and every words and feeling that goes with it!
And I agree ot SUCKS BIGTIME!!! ALL OF IT! Every new thing we have to do, place we go, thought we THINK SUCKS! Each and everyone of us would rather be holding hands and watching TV with the one we love I think it\'s safe to say. I\'m with ya, and i FEEL YA! But you know what? you are DOING it! Whether you are feeling real joy or not you are doing it, and that COUNTS FOR SOMETHING!
You know I went through the same motions as you, and still sometimes do it whether i want to or not. And I always think of this song and another I\'ll share with you. the first is I KNOW how Greg felt when he got the news of his illness. He was determined to live like he was dying. And for the most part and what the illness allowed, he did. Just like Nick did. so that\'s how I look at it now. doing it for Greg because he can\'t

How about we make a pact to keep doing it ok? that way when we DO get to see them again, we\'ll have LOTS to tell them about what we did with the time we had while they were waiting? Because hon, i do believe we will see them again. And until then we carry THEM with us. Maybe that will help during the REAL sucky times?!? Hope so. It\'s what keeps me going!!

LOVE TO YOU Darlen. this entry touched me on so many levels. I get it, and feel every word you wrote my dear friend. KNOW you are not alone. We WILL get through this. I PROMISE we will. COME ON VEGAS!!!! We can for a few days live like we are dying!!! :-)

\"Freedom\'s just another word for nothing else to lose.\" Have this song on my iphone...Janis Joplin\'s version is my favorite, and everytime I hear it I am like yep it hits the nail on the head. BTW this is a very inspiring journal, I love the way you are not going to lay down and just let this grief thing consume you.
Darlene, never give up, never surrender! You are doing what we have to do day by day and I\'m proud that you can persevere. Your friend is unbelievable. I\'m not surprised you haven\'t seen her again. She doesn\'t have a clue. She doesn\'t even have the hope of ever getting a clue. It is wonderful that we know what love truly is and have experienced it and are taking it with us. Thanks for sharing your life with us. Peace. Darleen
Darlene, you have explained a lot of my feelings lately. Good for you in the volunteer work and getting the support group going. Also joining a book club to be out and about is good. I hear you with ,\" The hollow empty lonely feelings still seem to fill my entire insides\" as I feel the same but that is not what others see from the outside.
I was just saying the last few days that Arnie would be upset that I have only \"existed\" the last year and not \"lived\".
I did chuckle when I read the playing a silly computer game all by yourself at night......that\'s me too !!!
I can\'t believe that a friend would say she was jealous of you as she knew Nick was going to die and then you would be \"free\" OMG !!! I was free in my marriage, I didn\'t need my husband to pass away to do what I wanted !!!!!
Hang in there and together we will all find some sort of life and not only an existance......hugs
a beautiful intensely sad inspiring journal.....and that song, by JJ is among my favorites...sometimes at night I listen i=to it and a few others on You Tube....
Whatever is wrong with your acquaintance is so very wrong.....
May you find peace and comfort.....

Darlene,
Your journal entry is so true and real. I keep on trying to find my way in this maze of grief. Sometimes it seems too much, but I think the point is to keep going and keep trying and keep healing. I have my family in my home and it is lovely----am I still lonely for Stan? You bet I am----I was working overtime yesterday----driving home at midnight saying---Baby, I can\'t believe it\'s been 19 months today since you left. I miss you so much---driving home after 16 hours of work with tears streaming down my cheeks, knowing in the past when I would work overtime and then back the next morning at 7, Stan would have packed my lunch and dinner for the 12 hour shift and driven me there and back making it as easy as he possibly could for me-----I love, love, love my kids and grand kids to the absolute max and I am grateful for them----but I MISS my husband---but will continue to work towards \"healing\". I need to, feel compelled to keep trying.
Huge Hugs to you, Sal
Darlene you are so right, it doesn`t matter how busy we keep ourselves nothing is like it was, it is hard not to reflect back on our day to day lives with our husbands. I would do anything to have that life back again.......I still wake up hoping this is over. You are trying my friend reaching out and making such a difference in so many lives. Here to hoping with more time the pain will lessen and that \"empty ache\" we feel is gone. Hugs Lu Ann
Oh Darleen, Prayers your way my friend, the pain is so strong now but what you are doing will help you to go on in life and not to forget the good memories but to cherish them as gifts from God.
It is Faith you need to know that yes this separation from Nick is only temporary.
You will see him again when God calls you home.
Hugs & God Bless,
Judy
