keeping grounded
Along the lines of the last journal post I made, I do and am finding peace when I create something
with my time. It's not only creating something, but it's also doing something for someone else.
If I have 'down time' - sometimes that can be great - but sometimes (well, a lot of times) it can make
me feel fear about the future - and about having the stability to have a secure life.
I asked my friend the Abbess if she found joy at the monastery - if it comes and goes - or is it different
for each person. She said, in so many words, that the joy of always doing her duty is what happens.
She said she doesn't think about it really - God gives her it. I thought that was an interesting idea.
I mean, in the sense or aspect of doing one's duty. I know for me it helps. When I go to my parents' house,
I like to help them prepare the meal by setting the table, or taking out the trash or doing the dishes.
It's the least I could do for them for all they do for us kids. At the same time I know that each of us likes
to 'pitch in' and help. That makes sense to me as well.
So, when I keep active to help me quiet my mind - I think it's a learned thing now - to reach out and help
someone else or take care of chores but there's so much more to it. I really wish I could have a pet here
at the apartment. I would love to have someone to love and get love back but for now I'll be the monk
and help where I can and create where I can create. It grounds me.

The longer I practice it, the more I believe in Mother Teresa's simple advice to sojourners in search of ways to change the world and/or quiet the chaos between their ears.
Just do what is in front of you.
The joy and serenity come from the decision to smile while I do what is in front of me.
Thanks Arfie!!
