Ignorant People
I have been bothered a lot lately by what people say to me. More so than usual. I know that these annoying people are just ignorant or hateful, but I get very frustrated at them.
I work in a white collar office type job in a booth where I have people in my face all day, both coworkers and customers. Customer service jobs are all I've ever done, other than a brief stint at a factory, which was unbearable. I like talking to people and I like helping people. I like providing a service. But more and more frequently I feel like I don't fit in here. At this job as well as others, I have often felt I need a translator. Which is ridiculous because most jobs I've worked we were all white English speakers. But I have trouble understanding people and they can't seem to understand me.
I have noticed a lot of people in my area lately who have horrible speech impediments that for some reason have never been corrected. I also have noticed at least half my customers can't read or write. What is going on here? Are being able to read write and speak correctly not important anymore? What's worse is they act like I'm the stupid one who talks funny. True I have a very thick accent and I mumble sometimes because I'm self conscious about speaking too loudly because loudmouths are annoying. Now I wonder, do I have a speech thing?? Do I have a hearing thing? What is the world coming too?
I get ignored now alot at work. I'm a well educated very intelligent person but I get treated like I'm stupid. Often when I speak to someone they ignore me. Even when I speak loudly. Or I constantly get asked to repeat myself. I feel invisible to most people. It's so weird because I am not an invisible person. I'm outgoing and 6 feet tall. I'm used to getting noticed. When I was in college all my teachers liked me and I was top of my classes, a good leader and study buddy. Maybe I should move to a city or a more educated area.
I live in the middle of nowhere. Our community is like a tiny inbred Berg sort of town. My mom and dads families were big on geneology so I know a lot of dirt on people, where they came from, who is related to me. My moms family has been here forever and old fashioned, pretty well to do people when the town first started. She always raised me to act so as not to make our family look bad. I always was quiet and well behaved at school. My dad always told me to keep it classy, not trashy. No tattoos or cussing. Be good at whatever I try to do.
Sometimes I wonder if people think I'm stuck up. I don't see how tho. I'm a very down-to-earth to earth person and I've always tried hard not to use big words. I still wonder tho if I just talk funny. I have a very thick southern accent.
Anyway I just wanted to gripe. I can't wait for vacation. People get on my nerves so bad. I'd like to see a new place, new people, new culture. Maybe someday I will work somewhere with people who can alphabetize and carry on interesting conversation. Maybe I will have more interesting clients.
Alot of how people are treating me I think has to do with my age. I'm the youngest person at my job. People talk down to me even when they are only 5 years older and much less intelligent. I really hate what a bad rap we millennials have when I know many people my age or are very smart, well mannered, and have multiple jobs or are married. Yet older generations still insist on infantizing us, demonizing us, and not recognizing any of our good points. I really think most of my generation just wants the world to be a better place. Being young is hard sometimes. Especially when surrounded by negative complacent people who don't even try.
I guess that's the end of my rant. Work will be over soon. I'm going kayaking!

Oh work problems, did I have those too!! I put up with 4 years of the kind of stuff you described, after a certain point, it got to either my mental health or my job, so I left. Good for you for sticking it out, I understand how hard it is!!
Here in Queens, NY, it's VERY multi-racial and hardly anyone here speaks English. My parents were immigrants. They learned English, got their Citizenship papers (which they were very proud of, they even framed the Certificate!). They learned to read, write and speak English, and went to work legally It was a perfect system years ago. Now anything goes. No one gives a darn that no one understands us, because they don't speak English! Your job sure must be hard.
When you're quiet or reserved, people read you as being not friendly or snotty. Everyone is not the same. So why can't people accept that we are quiet and reserved?? It pisses me off royally. We have a right to be, that's how we are!! I can't stand people who judge us so easily. Some of the nicest people I've known had the most difficult life, and they are gems. Also people who judge us are not nice. Ignoring or being nice to them doesn't help either.
I don't know what the solution is, but I give you credit for working there, I know it's not easy. Now I'm on a rant!!
