I said I coudn't do it

One of my co-workers today asked me to help out with a thing. We have a process to follow, and I told my co-worker to send the request to the right person, and then if it were to be assigned to me, then I would work on it. I feel good about it. I did not say "no", but I told I cannot work on it yet. 
Usually otherwise, I would just have started to work on it, and then I would be thinking about having to said no.
