I kin still shoot
Have y'all heard the phrase, "speak of the devil"? Well, we did on DS. It's 8:18 pm. About 20 minutes ago, I kilt me another snake. Aw, it was just an old chicken snake, maybe 4 feet long. It was getting too dark to see what kind of snake it was with out gettin' all up close and personal with it. My dogs ran up on it and it coiled and started striking at them. I started yellin' at the dogs they came back to me. It took me four shots to kill the snake --- I'll spare you the details, but my 4th shot took off most of it's head. Snakes are hard to shoot, especially when it's nearly dark and you don't have a light.
I had to be very careful with my aim, too. We came upon the snake after we'd walked back to the blacktop road. The snake was in the middle of the road. Blacktop can make for a dangerous ricochet. It was right in front of my brother's house, just past his driveway -- my brother's house was uphill from me to my right. In front of me was a neighbor's house, downhill and about 200 yards away. Behind me was my cousin's house, 150 yards away. EXTREME CAUTION REQUIRED!!! Shootin' like that is nuthin like target practicin'. If you don't believe me, try it yourself sometime.
I don't feel guilty at all about killing a chicken snake. They eat eggs and baby chicks. The snake was less than 100 yards from my niece's chicken coop and heading in that direction. My niece raises rare show-breed chickens and enters them in contests. She has some chicks that hatched about 3 weeks ago. Maybe I saved some of her expensive little chicks.
Actually, I feel kinda good about shooting the snake. In spite of the cfs fatigue and weakness, coupled with the nervousness from my fear for my dogs safety and making sure my shots didn't go toward any houses, I kin still hold a steady aim and shoot on target.
I had come out of my crash, for the most part, by Wednesday. I walked 2 miles Wednesday, and then again on Thursday. I did several loads of laundry today, and I was tired -- bordering on shaky tired. So, I had decided to only walk a mile today. (Tim's not here to walk the dogs, so I must do it.) I had gone my half mile out and was heading back home when the dogs riled the snake. I was afraid I was too tired and shaky to shoot accurately. But, hey y'all, I've still got it! Yes. I'm weird. Get over it. I've never claimed to be sane.
Oh, yeah .... my husband .... he say's that I'm a snake magnet. Geeessshhhhh! Comments like that really make me feel like a lady!
Whew. Goodnight to all, and may the snakes stay far, far away from wherever you are. They really do a number on the adrenaline.

Eeek!!! Glad you and the pooches are OK! I bet the adrenaline was rushing through you. Hope the rest of your weekend is restful and free of creepy crawly things! Hugs...
I hope I never see a snake around here! If I do, I\'m callin you and you kin come up here and blast the thing\'s head off. I have no emotional \"good thing\" going on in my head about the evil lookin things! Goodness, glad you shot that critter and saved some chickens!!
And it\'s ok to be weird! I\'m weird. People get used to us and let us run around doing crazy things and think nothing of it. It\'s kinda nice. I might dress up as a donut this morning and sit in a large coffee cup in ma yard. Nobody will think twice. I\'m that crazy lady in the corner house that never comes out. Expaining dunking my donut self into a cup of coffee is easier than explaining CFIDS....so I can do it! How bout you? Boston cream????
You know, I think I can see what you mean about feeling good about being able to protect your dogs. Since I got CFS, I haven\'t been able to shoot well. I used to be dead on. I could beat out my cousins in target practice, but when I got CFS I became a ball of nerves and couldn\'t even stand the sound of the gun. But your story reminds me that, when duty calls, we can still do great things. Thanks for that.
Ya little snake shootin hillbilly warrior woman.LOL !! We better keep a close eye on Darla though, very scary stuff.LOL !!
Never apologize for killing a snake! They all give me the creeps. I think it\'s crazy awesome that you are still able to shoot straight and kill that varmit without hurting anything else in it\'s path. You are not a snake magnet - you are a snake\'s worse enemy!!!!!
We have occasional black bears that visit MONJA! How are ya at shootin them critters? I could get you a job........!
See what I mean about Darla, Pilot. One minute she thinks she\'s a doughnut, the next she thinks she\'s a hillbilly. You know like EllyMay from the Beverly Hillbillies.LOL !!
Hey DeadEye,
If you run for sheriff you got my vote! I here you on the adrenalin.......just thinking about what you did spikes my own adrenalin.......you were brave, did what was necessary........kept yourself, your dogs as well as baby chick/and tasty growed up chickens safe from that mean ol snake.
all we need now is a catchphrase and you could land a movie deal.........can i be your agent? .......i think you\'re brave and amazing........big big big hugs!!!!
rest up hon, you done good!!!!!!!!!!!!
