I hate this
So, my stepdaughter Z, has continued to push me. She wants to talk to my lawyers, both the estate lawyer and the personal injury lawyer. Both lawyers have told me they will not talk to her -- if she has a lawyer, they will talk to her lawyer. So, I finally told her that. This is going to blow up big time. Maybe I need to change the locks on my house. Ugh. I really hate this. What do they want me to do? Give up my house and home? The one that I helped pay for, for the past 9+ years and that I am continuing to do so? The home that they never bothered to care about? The home that they rarely came to once they were "grown up"? The home that they never considered their home? It was only a place to sleep when they HAD to be with their father. Now, they are going to hire a lawyer and make this whole thing VERY contentious, and expensive. This is going to get VERY bad. I think I am going to have to change the locks, yes. Terrible.

The stepkids sound VERY selfish to me. What does their mother have to say about this if anythng? From what you have said, it is not as if any of them are in dire financial need, so why would they care about the house? I am so sorry you have to go through all this. laurabp
Laura, you are correct, of course. But their mother is in cahoots on this. She has submitted a claim against the estate for monies allegedly owed to her by my late husband (about 10k) and she is also making a claim for 375k. You see, there was a clause in their divorce agreement that Barry was supposed to have carried 375k life insurance for the kids alone. Not only did he not carry that life insurance he did not carry any for me! The value of our house is very close to what is owed on it. If I were to sell the house now (not a good idea given the market today) it would net us at most about 67k, far less than the 375k she is claiming in life insurance for the kids. So, she is pushing the kids to push me and to take from me every penny they can!
