Having a family
I was thinking about my little sister who has grown into a really 'trad wife'. She's a perfectionist homemaker and incidentally a really good, attentive mom. I find myself on the outside of her orbit now. She lives very far away and rarely responds to a text here and there. She's completely consumed with her family.
i was trying to understand her and find commonality with her, even so far away and now distant. I was wrestling with my own challenges here today.
With the little time off that I had today, I tried to direct myself and have my own interests fulfilled here at the monastery while serving the community. I had a hard time with it. Absolutes came to mind which always freezes me like a deer in headlights.
I came undone a little and thought, as I did my chores, about really wanting something today to be 'about me' and again I was challenged to do so (because I am a perfectionist unfortunately when it comes to my own pursuits and life vectors and imaginings.) Not knowing freezes me in a question mark. But I thought, well, maybe because of that hard to satisfy self I've been attracted to just give up all personal life and dedicate it to a group as a way of finding peace, fellowship, clarity and security.
So, again I found myself trying to find commonality with my sister and I thought about how she has subjugated her immediate life for the work of committing to her family and children and I thought about it and I reflected that I have done the same but in a different way. It may sound cliche but there are all different kinds of families. This here on the site as well feels like one too.
I've found a joy in my commitment here now today. I feel a sense of personal satisfaction with what I'm doing, if at times mixed with a little ambivalence:). Maybe at times that haunts all or each of us in whichever family we are serving.:)

I agree completely that there are all kinds of families and they're so precious
I think things that sound cliche are often truth
Big hug sweetie
Thanks Janet!!
I like AI's definition of "family." -
The true meaning of family is the unconditional love, support, and trust shared between individuals, regardless of blood relation. It is a chosen bond based on care, respect, and a deep emotional connection, formed through shared experiences, support during challenges, and acceptance for who you are.
That's great Susan!!!! :) x
i thought about my own fear to make a move in any direction in life - and I thought
how those independent ventures - rather than a supporting role - but rather a center role -
is something that I have shied away from -
for some golden reason today after writing the previous journal- I thought about the fact
that my art has been the most consistent thing I can produce...
that's pretty important - CONSISTENCY - as a concept -
I can't be perfect in everything I do - not even the best things I have talent for -
but I am pretty consistent with art - and I realized that I am for the most
part - though a learning priest - I am a pretty consistent solid 'liturgizer' here at the monastery -
YOU GUYS and my therapist have been very very consistent with me and I appreciate it -
my Dad and friends and family have been so consistent -
I came back to Blue tonight - I have been worrying that lately I have not been
such a good Dad to him - that I was screwing him up in some weird way -
but then I came back tonight -and reasonability reigned supreme - I recognized I have been
pretty consistent at loving him - not perfect - but pretty consistent in showing him
he matters and I care and love him and I think he knows that :). xx
Sending xoxoxo Peace and prayers and hugs!!
I love what you've written about your consistancy sweetie
You are very consistant in making this world a better place....xo
Thanks Jan!
bob dylan always seems to provide the soundtrack for the meditations, etc., of making my peace with the subjugation of my life dreams for the sake of caring for my families. plural intended. seems like god has made me the matriarch of more than one family.
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the Devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
given the intensity of the mom-as-the-root-of-all-evil trend, i am never quite sure if i am serving the devil or the lord, but i''m definitely serving.
today's service is septic. literally. the septic tank backed up yesterday and the toilets and showers are out of service. methinks i am serving the devil today. sigh. . . compost happens? it could happen to you.
Ugh that’s rough Arfie
and we survived another one. . .
whoda thunk that flushing a toilet without it going to the shower drain could be such a relief? today i might even call toilet flushing, "jolly good fun." it pays to be able to get your thrills cheap.
It’s the little things
