Happy birthday to my son

I have found myself lost in the newness of having adult children. I have found that even though they seem like mature people they still have a childlike heart with their parents. Therefore, the dynamic of our relating to each other has to carefully be adjusted. I simply assumed that since they were on their own now they did not need me. I became very verbal about their lack of understanding with my struggles living a lone. I have commented here before about the sacrifices I have made for my children. Yet, I felt like I received nothing in return. When in all reality they were needing me to affirm their maturity. Unfortunately, I just complained about them not being there for me. I now realize that they are incapable of giving to me in that way right now. I’m sure it will come in time, but for now, the best thing I can give to them is the assurance that I’m ok with out them. With that understanding I have come to realize that they still need confirmation about who they are and encouragement in their direction in this world and ways of coping in this world as a young adult.
Yesterday was my sons 21st Birthday. So, I have desired to affirm him as a man. This is dedicated to him:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SON!
Today, 21 years ago, my life changed forever when God gave me a son. I have had the most incredible journey sharing this life time with such a big hearted young man. His humor tickled my soul in so many ways especially in the most difficult times. His presence has giving me a sense of safety in many overwhelming moments. His gift giving language of love has blessed me with many treasures. I received wisdom when life seemed a bit confusing even in the years of his youth. He has cherished and adored his sister and protected her with his insight and love. I watched my son over come many obstacles in his life and has grown into a good man even without the influence of a Father. He stands strong in his convictions and will defend the truth with all his might. His creativity shines through his music and art and those he chooses to love. I’ve had the pleasure of enlarging my family as he gave his heart to a very precious woman, I can now call my daughter-in-law. I watched him give his life for our country when he followed out orders to go to Iraq. He has brought honor to our family name and it has been my great joy and honor to call him my son. I am so proud of him. I am truly a blessed Mother. Happy Birthday son! I love you.
