Halloween
Well, first let me say this is my FAVORITE holiday/celebration. I enjoy the decorations, the dark undertones, and the whole reason behind the day. As well as the candy of course :).
So I was carving a pumpkin with my daughter and she asked why we do it. So I told her! It's to guide the spirits so they know where to go. She didn't get spooked, upset or any of the sort. Instead she said 'oh, well that's a really good thing then mummy, so they don't get lost'.
Enter MIL....bum bum bummmmmmmm. She lectured me on stealing my daughters innocence and how improper it was for me to fill her head with nonsense. I'm an athiest....I don't believe in heaven or hell. In ghosts of spirits. But that doesn't mean I can change why Halloween is! So I told her the truth, the history at that, and that's bad? I'm a little confused. I mean, she's dressing up as a care bear to go get candy today. We roasted pumpkin seeds and decorated the yard with fake grave stones and cob webs. So I told her what a jack o lantern was for...so what? How is that stealing her innocence?
On another note I'm a bit bummed about the weather lol. We spent MONTHS looking for this stupid pink care bear costume. We found it in a city three hours away in the end and bought it. It 'fits' in the Canadian sense of the word pertaining to Halloween costumes. In other words it's big enough for a layer or two of clothes underneath it to ward off the cold. But now we have freezing rain! It's not big enough for a flipping snow suit. All the snow melted yesterday and I was like 'yay! Semi good weather!' and now we have sleet.
So I'm going to have to try to fit three layers under the costume, and undoubtedly the weather is going to demolish it. Grrrrrrr. But as a kid I know a little sleet never stopped me from getting that candy! And I'm sure my daughter will be the same!
