Working through a "separation"
Two days ago, I, uh, stopped dating my boyfriend. I don’t like to use the term “broke up” because it has negative connotations.
Well, it was my first relationship, then my first end of a relationship. We didn’t stop because of anything really going wrong. I just stopped feeling the same way as I used to. It felt wrong to keep going on when I didn’t return those feelings anymore. It would have been lying to him and to me.
At least, I knew that before I told him, but now I’m suddenly having doubts. I know there’s no going back, but I keep thinking about what I’ve lost now. Things are so awkward. We’re still friends, but I can’t think of anything to say and he’s really quiet. We still see each other everyday, and everything’s the same except it’s not anymore.
He was hurt, of course he was, he was really invested in us but I wasn’t and I couldn’t force myself to be. But he respected my decision gallantly. Kindly. I doubt I’ll ever find such a nice and caring guy again.
But towards the end I was just too busy, the relationship was too much pressure, we were too different, and we’re both bad at communicating. I guess, as people say, it just “wasn’t meant to be.” That doesn’t mean I’m not really sad about it though.
Can anyone share their own experiences, or offer advice? Moving on, how you felt, etc.
Part of me is relieved that I don’t have to worry anymore. I really don’t. Not about a future I don’t want, or acting the girlfriend, or spending obligatory “relationship time” with him. But mostly I just feel sad right now. I’m sure it will pass but for now I’m just working through it. And aahhh I don’t know how to deal with him, I know he must be distraught but the emotions he shows are close to nothing. Like a statue. I think he thinks it’s his fault.

I'm sorry to hear about this separation. In my life, anytime I was the one to break it off, there were serious problems. So, I don't have exactly the same experience. Every loss needs to have a proper season of mourning. I'm sure you will find someone else who is kind and good to you. The fact that you are sad about it doesn't mean it was the wrong choice. Get into a quiet place and try to really figure out what you want. Maybe you do love him. Sometimes we don't know what we have until it's gone. Just listen to your heart. Love you.
