Flood....Again
The city is on flood warning. Seriously?
Where I live got a flood about once every ten years, like clock work. You could bet on it! I remeber the first flood I lived through, I was about eight. I remember seeing furniture floating down the streets. Houses sinking. We went to see the river and we saw a bear, clutching a wicker table, being swept away, certain to drown. When the water's finally left there were dead animals, drowned, all over the place. There were a few elderly people found, who just didn't get out in time. Lives were ruined.
Then right before winter, it happened again. We had had tons of rain, all summer, and we flooded. People were left homeless...my little sister and her son house hopped for almost four months before they found place. Houses were washed away, deemed inhabitable. But the people by the river spent all winter rebuilding themselves. Where I live there is NO SUCH THING AS FLOOD INSURANCE. So if you lost your home, your belongings, you got nada.
And now, with the unusual amount of snow, there is a warning again. I live on a hill, high above. I look down on the river, our home is safe, unless it get's so bad the sewers back up. But the people down there aren't.
And the kicker? The city has taken control of all the sandbags that big companies give away when they are done with them, saying they will decide where they go...leaving people to scavange for sand bags. We sell them wehre I work, $5.99 per bag(it's a gas station, crazy expensive) and people come and spend $300 on sandbags, just to save their homes.
Out of the five golf courses we have, three were so damaged that they had to close for the season, one of those is already back under water, most likely about to close for good.
Our roads gush water, the rain falls, then it snows, then it melts, all within a 24 hour cycle. The gutters are over flowing, and the soil is being destroyed. Sure, red cross helps, but it's not enough.
When my little sister's home flooded in the fall, the program taht was set up to help flood victims told her to leave her sons soaking mattress out in the sun for a day or two, then it would be fine to use. No thought to the mould, the filthy water that it had been submerged in. They were told to do the same with their furniture. They did it with thier couch to see. And you could smell the flood on it after, and about a month after a mouse family came out of their couch!
I just need to unload. People wonder, if it floods, why buy near the river bank? But for some, that's all they can afford, houses are cheap to rent and buy down there! Maybe I should move, but, part of me loves this stupid place!
