Final Plans

My husband and I went to the funeral home yesterday and went through the process of planning our final arrangements. There was more to it than I had expected, if you plan to do it, give yourself at least 2 hours. Good news, they are willing to cremate my precious scrapbooks with me so they will be with me forever, not decaying in a landfill. It's a huge weight off my shoulders.

We are going to try to get an appointment with the lawyer of our choice next week to write our will. Once those things are taken care of, I think I will have less to worry about...but will probably find other things to worry about.

A friend of Cassi's from high school came to visit today. Well, elementary school as well. I had some questions I wanted to ask, that I was afraid to ask before...I had learned a lot about Cassi's life after she passed that she had not shared with me and I wanted to fill in some blanks.

Her friend Dana, told me that Cassi was bullied in elementary school for her weight. There was one particular mean girl named Lindsey Middlebrooks who would call Cassi fat...she would gather her followers around, and make Cassi cry. Dana had actually punched her in the face once...Lindsey and her squad had cornered up another little girl on the playground and she was crying, and Dana just couldn't take it anymore. Cassi never told me she was being bullied, or even mistreated in any way. I suppose she wanted to shelter me from it, so she carried the pain all herself, on her little 7 year old shoulders. I can't help but wonder how much of an effect it had on her in later years. I knew Lindsey Middlebrook's mother from high school, or rather, I knew of her. She was 4 years older than me, and I wasn't even on her radar. What I remember...she was very beautiful, very tall and thin, very cruel...and very popular in that weird way that some people are popular, but are really hated at the same time. It seemed people feared her...she really wasn't well liked, but no one showed it. Whatever activities were available, she was the star of. She was editor of the yearbook her senior year, and it was basically a portfolio dedicated to her. Her classmates were angry about it, but as usual no one confronted her about it. The child learned the self-centered cruelty from her mother, obviously. I found her on facebook. I sent her a message, "Did you bully my daughter in elementary school? In case you forgot, her name was Cassi." I haven't received a response, don't know if I should.

Cassi wasn't bullied in her later years, not that I know of anyway. She developed a tough persona and I think a lot of people were afraid of her. But I just wonder if the abuse she suffered in those early years damaged her in some way she didn't recover from.

It hurts so bad to think about my little girl being driven to tears at school, and not telling me about it...or did she feel she couldn't tell me??? Or that I couldn't do anything about it??? I don't know if I could have, but I could have tried, and been a source of comfort for my little girl.

I keep searching, keep digging, as we do when our children take their own lives...we want to figure it out, see where it started going wrong, where we started going wrong. It makes no sense, but I feel if I could get it all figured out I could fix it.

If that girl contributed to my child's lack of self-esteem, she contributed to her depression, she contributed to her early exit. She deprived Cassi of a long, normal life, she deprived me and our family of Cassi, the joy she brought to us and the everlasting sadness we must now endure. She deprived me of my grandchild....of the entire future I had planned for us. I am angry...white hot, no words angry.

Dark thoughts tonight...Maybe I am unable to see things clearly from my perspective as Cassi's loving mother...Or maybe she deserves all the dark thoughts.

It's really hard being a parent. As much as I miss, I don't think I'd choose to do it again. Our children aren't safe.

Gina, it does sound like you are, right at the moments of writing your journal, in a dark place. I really feel that as we dig deeper into the parts of our children's lives that we weren't aware of, where we need the information to fill in the pieces of the puzzle, some of the information is going to ignite our triggers of not protecting our children. This isn't right or wrong and there is no blame to be had, just pieces of lives gone way too soon and another part of something we have to learn to live with... I am so sorry that Cassi was bullied. Children can be so cruel. I so wish this world was a kinder, gentler place... Tightest of hugs, thank you for sharing, Merrilee <3

Gina, I'm so sorry that Cassi was bullied in school. Bullying is a terribly hurtful thing to experience. I guess we will never know why our children did not share some things with us but I know one thing; you did your best for your daughter. Be gentle on yourself. Don't beat yourself up for what you were not even aware of.
I am relieved that you can have your precious scrapbooks with you when the time comes. Tight hugs, Linda ♡

I am SO very sorry that Cassi was bullied as a child and as a teacher I had zero tolerance for this and kept a keen and watchful eye out. The children knew they could come to me and that I would handle it in a way that there would be minimal retaliation if any at all. I worked on making our class a safe place for us all to BE and to grow because it mattered to me so very much. I do think often our children try to protect us from their hurts and challenges because they don't want us to think that there is anything "wrong" with them. I used to investigate this kind of thinking with my own two and with my students and they said that if they brought it up to us they were afraid that by our involving ourselves that it would make it unbearable for them, so they carried it on those tiny shoulders that you mentioned. Deepest of sighs...

Healing your heart and self forgiveness becomes our way to "fix" now as parents what we could not with our children. We carry a universal wound that needs to be tended to. Please be gentle with yourself and center in your heart where you truth resides. The mind will play games with us and spin endlessly, yet the heart is our truth center. BE in that beautiful heart of yours, Gina.

Hand in hand, Heart to heart with understanding,
XO Joanie

This is terrible, children are so cruel. It must be learned behavior, so many kids are bullied and the cannot take it any more, they take their own life just to be free. Not to be cruel back but it may come back to bite them. As you dig into Cassie's life you may find some answers to your questions. This may give you understanding, and give you one more step forward in healing.

Oh my dear. I am so sorry.
You were the best mother you could be. As the old saying goes, there are no courses in mothering.
It hurts like hell when we learn things about our kids that we were unaware of. It is so hard not to blame ourselves, even though we were unaware. It makes sense in our minds but not in our hearts.
I am so glad your scrap books are going to be with you. We have wills but haven't planned our funerals. I have been toying with the idea of writing my own obit!
Take care of you Gina.
Love and tight hugs to you and Cassi.

So very sorry to hear that Cassi was bullied at school, so was my Catherine for most of her school life. I still find it so painful when I remember what she suffered. Bullies are hurting themselves, that's why they do it and are often jealous of their victims. You are not to blame at all! We knew about Catherine's bullying but felt helpless. I went to the school but they did nothing and said that those girls couldn't be singled out! The ring leader turned the whole class against her (she was only 9!) Groups of them came round to our house and stood under Catherine's bedroom window jeering at her. Bullying scars people for life, Catherine had no self-esteem. She wore glasses and braces and she was cruelly taunted. She did forgive those girls though, it was me who struggled with it. You are very much in my thoughts Gina, sending you lots of love,

I hate bully's and bullying! I'm so very sorry your sweet girl suffered at the hands of a bully, and I'm so sorry she did so in silence. I know you would have done whatever you could have to stop it and I'm sorry you didn't get the chance to at least try.

Roger and I have gone through all the steps you and your husband are doing regarding future end of life plans. I feel good about doing it and like you say, that's one less thing to worry about.

I wish for you peace, comfort and joy as you continue your journey.
