Father’s family
After observing the relationship between my grandparents and my dad, I’ve noticed some things. My dad is very dominant and demanding. My grandparents- his parents- usually go with what he says. My grandmother is the scapegoat. Whenever she is blamed, my grandfather does not take her side but goes with it as well.
It leaves a sour feeling in my gut. i wonder how long back this dysfunctional family goes.
A few weeks ago, my dad was full on yelling at my grandmother, saying she was KILLING him and it was her fault he would DIE earlier. You know why he said that. Because she puts too much salt when she cooks.
Dramatic much?
It was painful to watch. My grandmother and father ganging up on my grandmother. She doesn’t show it, but I know she is hurt. She usually reacts by getting annoyed, but I know that she’s bothered. I know she’s afraid. At that time, I went up to her in the middle of it and hugged her, and I chastized them, ME, a 16 year old girl in a culture where the youth should respect their elders. “How can you be so mean to your own mother? What kind of example are you trying to set?”
It.. worked. My dad apologized? And they even admitted to being mean to her.. and said they’d do better. I don’t really believe that, but my grandma has been putting less salt in her food lately. It’s one of the first changes I’ve ever seen in her. Her memory is horrible, so I’m surprised she’s going so far to do this. I wonder what it was. My dad, or me?
I was so scared going up to my grandmother. I was 80% sure they’d just yell at me too. I was sitting at my computer pretending not to hear and deliberating back and forth whether or not to go.. but I thought FUCK IT and my legs got up on their own.
I don’t really feel heroic though. It was very spur of the moment. Who knows if I can replicate that kind of action? And it didn’t do much.. they were back at it again this week. Though, less intensely. No one yelled at my grandma.
Poor old lady. When I was a kid, even I yelled at her. Everyone, and I mean everyone did, so I followed suit. Everyone got mad and annoyed at her. She is very easy to get annoyed at, because she’s hard of hearing and a lot of the times tries to push unnecessary stuff onto us (and doesn’t listen when we refuse). Still. Be the better person, right?
When I told my dad to stip being cruel to her, he said “I have to do this or else she won’t listen.” She’s never listened to him when he does that. What kind of logical fallacy is this? That kind of blind anger doesn’t bring results, but people believe they do. They just indulge themselves on this to the detriment of others.
Again, my dad being stupid and being the very antithesis to my beliefs.
PS, today he invited them to go to a spa, and got PISSED when they refused. Jeez! Let them make a decision! He even guild trioped them like I already bought the tickets and if you don’t come they’ll be wasted because of you.

Wow. Kudos to you for sticking up for your grandmother. I am sure that hug at that moment ment the world to her.
Not exactly sure what to say about your dad except to learn from him. You should know what behavior you are not willing to accept in your own relationships to break that cycle.
Yes, this sounds very dysfunctional. There are patterns that emerge in families and can be carried out over many generations if they are not stopped consciously by someone. I see these things in my family too. I have set about naming them and renouncing them. I will not let them carry over one generation more. They must stop with me. It sounds like you have a similar situation. Standing with a bullied person is hard, but it is the right thing to do. It sounds like your family bullies her and encourages others to do so as well. Break the cycle. I know you have more strength than you know. Love you, girl.
well first of all, u broke the chain, I am so proud of YOU:):):) in most cultures where the women are subservient, men take out their frustrations on the women/ or exercise their 'power' (ppl with authentic power need not do this) Whatever inkling your Grandmother had of fighting back, she lost a long time ago, maybe as a young girl, and I believe, your actions are stirring within her a memory of a long forgotten little girl who watched her own Grandmother be treated the very same way.....xoxooxoxo
In our family both grandmothers, my mom, her sister and all daughters of both were brought up just as your Grandma. Quite a few of the men I believe were not completely content and satisfied. I think that because they felt they had no control in their own lives, they took pleasure in having that control over others. (especially the women) I think too that the cruel, nasty words that we continuously hear do beat us down. It is also very unfortunate that those who seem so genuinely miserable and in some sort of pain are not happy unless they can spread their hurt and pain around.
When we have family get togethers... we are often ridiculed... maybe as being air headed or forgetful... not the best drivers or easily confused with their directions.... or comments are made to the effect of them having to put up with us and our shortcomings (like they have none?! HA) It is all done jokingly in fun ( but actually these words have convinced us all there is some truth and we are not good enough... thus continuing to put up with this " verbal abuse" and try to laugh it off.)
For your grandma...after all this time of noone standing up for or telling her otherwise..... she also does believe all that she's been often told. Seeing that behavior and actually speaking up on her behalf I am sure was one of the greatest joys for her.
You said yourself... you did often treat her the same.... simply followed suit. That's what happens... all will treat her (or me... or you.. ) the same. Because that is the way it is... and that is all she believes .
I try very hard to look at people and figure out WHY they are the way they are. It does give me a better understanding. You did a great thing... not just for your grandma, but for you. You found a voice for the both of you. Good for you!!! You are a very caring, compassionate, insightful young woman. You go girl! :)
