Familiar Places

The places you go each day sometimes seem to bring the ho-hums. Tedius trips to the store, numerous visits to doctor. The Doctor.
Today I had an appointment with our family physician. I had been putting off making an appointment for me for months. I didn't want to burden my husband, Jeff, with another trip to a place that had become too familiar to him. A place where he knew he was going to be stuck for labwork again. So, I kept my aches and pains to myself and self medicated with Tylenol or whatever over the counter product I felt would give me relief for whatever was ailing me.
I was suprised how emotional I felt as I pulled up to the front of the building. I thought to myself how silly it was and I walked towards the entrance. As I went in and approached the receptionist, I felt a wave of dread come over me. It never occurred to me that I would dread the words of caring and well wishes of the staff who took care of Jeff as he battled his illness. But as nurses said hello and I was lead to the room where the doctor would see me, I found myself in tears.  Sharon, the nurse who was taking my vitals looked at me and asked if I needed a hug? I didn't realize just how badly I did need one.
When my doctor came into the room, she came over to me and hugged me and told me how sorry she was to hear of Jeff's passing. Again, I cried. We visited about Jeff and how things had transpired for him. She listened and answered general questions for me, even though she was not present with him at his time of death. When she was sure she had answered everything she could for me, she turned to treating me.
I left the doctor's office with a mix of emotions and feelings. But mostly, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I had conquered that familiar place.
