Eleven Months Ago

Dear Fred:
Tomorrow (the 28th) will mark the 11th month of Nick's death.  He died in the very early morning hours of that awful day.  However, the memories of the 27th of March still haunt me and will do so for the rest of my life. They are almost more than I can bear.  I so hope they will ease in time.
Nick continued to be so brave that day.  I know he was in terrible pain.  He could not lie still in bed and the male nurse had to come every few minutes and try to lift him to the commode.  Nick's bodily functions were all shutting down so he continued to have the sensations that he needed the commode but nothing ever relieved him.  He hurt so badly.
Our nurse was so patient with Nick.  He knew Nick was in the active stage of dying and tried to prepare me.  He also took it on himself to contact the doctor on call to arrange for an airbed to be specially ordered for Nick so he could rest more comfortably.  None of the other medical staff cared enough to do this.  I will always remember and be grateful for that bit of kindness and compassion he showed Nick.
Nick had stopped eating and drinking.  The nurses would just drop off his tray and never try to encourage him or help him.  He was too weak to have fed himself.  He could not have eaten even if he had felt like it.  I stayed with him and tried to get him to eat a little broth.  He could not do this.  I then tried to get him to drink a little apple juice.  He did not want to, you could tell.  But that dear brave man tried his best and did drink a tiny bit.  I know it was more for my benefit than his own.
He would lapse in and out of sleep.  We didn't talk much as he was so weak.  I was able to tell him many times that I loved him.  He would try to answer but his words were very slurred.  He finally slipped in to a comatose state.
I stood by him and stroked his forehead, held his hand and began talking to him remembering happy times we had shared together.  Once in a while I could feel a response from his hand or see an eyelid flutter.
I could not believe he was dying.  I felt a huge urgency that somehow God or the Cosmos would know what was happening and correct this huge and awful mistake.  I kept feeling a panicked need to run... run and tell someone or something that Nick was dying and that they had to stop it.  I had no one to run to.  And, neither God nor the Cosmos showed up to correct this horrible mistake that was happening.  Even Nick's doctor never showed up.  All I could do was try to comfort him with words and with touch.  I had lost the battle.  I had lost him.
That night the nursing staff changed and we lost our good nurse.  He was replaced by a very lazy uncaring young woman.  She did nothing to help Nick and was usually late with his pain medications.  Her movements were slow and insolent and she was very non-responsive to any of Nick's pain or needs.  If I ever meet her in a dark ally she had better be able to run faster than I can!
Nick's bodily functions continued to shut down.  He finally could not process the oxygin he was breathing.  I watched as his levels continued to fall.  I continued to talk to him and brush his forehead.  I did not want him to feel the fear and sorrow I felt.  I told him he was a valiant and brave person and that I understood he had to leave me.
The nurse began checking his heart and I knew neither God nor the Cosmos were going to prevent this horrible horrible mistake.  I felt Nick exhale and completely relax.  I knew he was gone.  Gone from the life he loved.  Gone from the work he loved.  And, gone from me forever.
I am honored by having shared 22 years with this man.  I hope someday I will be able to recall him and all the good things we shared without the bitterness of tears and heartbreak.
Thank you, Fred, for listening and for remembering this with me.  I leave this as a tribute to Nick and for his extreme bravery and kind spirit.

Darlene,

Thank you for sharing such a personal, heartwrenching account of your beloved Nick\'s passing. I know the heartache it caused just to write this, and feel it right along with you my friend.

what I read here is an account of a woman who loved her husband with everything she is, and although he was and is somewhere in that cosmos a brave valiant soul, the woman beside him when he left is a brave champion of his life, and also of his passing. You were there at the beginning, and also there at the very end. You ARE his HERO. NEVER have a doubt in your mind that you are. I do not.

HUGS Darlene and much love to you. Nick is in awe of all you were to him and all you have become. You will remember the good and less of the bad. You already will with writing this and getting it down to paper.

It was magnificent and so are you

Darlene, Your words touch me deep down in my soul. How blessed you were to have that time with you dear husband to love him and tell him so. I know you were able to help him to make the transition with the peace and comfort you wanted for him. What a gift of love you were able to give to him in his last hours. And what of a gift of love you have given to us by sharing this story. Hugs to you,

What a wonderful heartfelt journal entry. The love you shared is very obvious and will never be forgotten. How gut-wrenching to watch someone you love go through this....you were there at his side and he knew how much you loved him, and him you. He will always be with you and proud for all you have done........hugs

Darlene, I can feel your pain in every word you write. It was the most awful experience for you but you made it easier for him. He was enveloped in your love when he left and that has to have been more comfort to him than anything else could bring. It\'s been over 2 years for me and it\'s only very recently that I can allow the memories to linger, up until now they were just too painful a reminder of what could never be again. Gradually it does get easier as we adjust but it\'s a long hard road with many stumbles. Sending you lots of hugs, Lottie

Darlene, You will be able to see him again and he will be young and healthy and even more beautiful to you then he ever was.
why? Because of God\'s Word promises us that.

Romans 8:18

The Future Glory
18 I consider that what we suffer at this present time cannot be compared at all with the glory that is going to be revealed to us.

Revelation 21
The New Heaven and the New Earth
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth disappeared, and the sea vanished. 2 And I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared and ready, like a bride dressed to meet her husband. 3 I heard a loud voice speaking from the throne: Now God\'s home is with people! He will live with them, and they shall be his people. God himself will be with them, and he will be their God.

4 He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more grief or crying or pain. The old things have disappeared.
5 Then the one who sits on the throne said, And now I make all things new! He also said to me, Write this, because these words are true and can be trusted. 6 And he said, It is done! I am the first and the last, the beginning and the end. To anyone who is thirsty I will give the right to drink from the spring of the water of life without paying for it. 7 Those who win the victory will receive this from me: I will be their God, and they will be my children.

8 But cowards, traitors, perverts, murderers, the immoral, those who practice magic, those who worship idols, and all liarsthe place for them is the lake burning with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

Hugs & God Bless,
Judy

It\'s so obvious how much you loved him--I hope and pray that in time many many good memories will push aside those horrid memories of that last day and you will smile rather than cry. Hugs

Thank you for sharing with us from the depths of your heart. You are a remarkable, loving woman. Your husband had your loving words and tender touch as he left this world. I know how hard it is to keep trying to learn this new life we are thrust in. We are in this together to encourage and hold each other up. Many hugs to you, Sal

Darlene, I still have tears in my eyes after reading this. My keyboard is so fussy. My husband died the same way, except his nurses were all wonderful - even made me a bed that last night. I did not use it until about 4 am though - I did not want to leave his side. As I lay there I could see his chest going up and down and then it finally stopped - now I am sobbing for all of us that has lost someone. Hugs, Valerie
