Dave & Me - it is coming to a close now.
After all the soul searching, really liking and respecting myself, I have decided that I will be breaking up with Dave. I don't know when or how I am going to do it but enough is enough. Dave criticizes me and is surprised that I get mad at him. Dave is an alcoholic who drinks and drives. I don't need that crap in my life anymore. I want a good person who drinks socially and is responsible about it as well. I want someone much better than Dave. I really lowered my standards when Smokey died but now my standards are back again. I think I am trying to be an honest and genuine "me" again. I think I am coming back after the almost two years in November pain of losing the love of my life Smokey. I know Smokey would want me to be with a decent guy, which is not Dave. Dave has a kind, caring, genuine and loving personality. Its why I have been with him for so long. The two negative things about Dave have destroyed our relationship. There is no mending fences. I guess I see things in black and white. If anyone sees my relationship with Dave in a different light, I would really like to know.

I am sorry you have to go through this Diane, but I support your decision. I am glad to see how positive and strong you seem in your post. I think the reasons you describe for making this decision are part of why I am not interested in a romantic relationship. I will not \"settle\" for less than I had. Also, one thing that I have learned from being a widow is that I no longer have to live with a man\'s criticism of me, which is another reason why I am not looking for a man. Do they not understand that this is hurtful, or do they not care? You don\'t have to endure it, and I applaud your decision not to! Plus, as the daughter of an alcoholic father, I know what the disease does to relationships. You don\'t need that either! You have enough to cope with without these two problems. I support you all they way. (((Hugs))), Patti
Diane - I agree with Patti. You do not need this in your life, not now and not ever. You deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and to be loved for who you are. We should never \"settle\" for less that what we are worth. You have had a wonderful, loving relationship with Smokey - and if another relationship such as that should come along, that would be terrific. But, you need to love YOU, be happy with YOU and do what is best for YOU right now.
I am glad to see you being positive and strong and to see that you realize that you don\'t need crap in your life. None of us do - especially when we are trying to make our way along this journey.
Sending you a hug for a good weekend,
Chris
