Confusing...

As usual, even over 3 1/2 years in, my emotions run the gamut...I can have a relatively peaceful day, even hopeful, and then bottom out the next day.

I had a very bad day yesterday. It didn't start out that way, but I was triggered, badly, and went down for the count. Terrible face-clawing pain...my husband did what he could...but he is just so limited in how he can relate to me at those times. I don't know if it's because he is a man or just the man he is. He tries to distract me, "get my mind off it"...almost like offering a child a lollipop to stop her from crying over a skinned knee. What he just doesn't understand is that quieting me down does nothing, short term relief at best. When I am in that state of mind, I'm not thinking of the moment or the day or the week. I am thinking about the years I will suffer before I get to see my child again. I'm thinking of all I have lost, I am thinking about all the plans I had made being over...I am thinking that this is just too much pain and I want it to stop. The only thing I know to do at times like that is talk to someone who understands, another grieving mom, who will just listen or maybe gently guide me to a better place. I am in several support groups, for parents who have lost their child to suicide, for parents who have no living children or grandchildren. I have literally spent hours talking on the phone, or texting or messaging other mothers who were in a state of crisis. I have listened, cried along with them, shared my story, whatever they needed and as long as they needed, until they were spent. Until they had gotten it all out. My husband has resented this at times, for dedicating so much time to mothers who really, really needed me. He has felt neglected at times.

I am not in any way saying I did any of this completely out of the goodness of my heart. That has always been part of it, but there's more. It makes me feel good. Besides that feel-good emotion you get from performing good deeds, I feel useful. I feel strong, wise, like a leader. I feel what I give...so there is a selfish aspect of it too. Yes, I love to help, especially in times of crisis, that's my niche'. I am not that interested in daily contact when things are going well, just the occassional message is fine. I don't like small talk, I like deep, dark, authentic conversations.

I very rarely reach out for help in private messages or phone calls, in fact, I can't remember the last time I did...before yesterday. I can usually write...whether it's a journal here, a blog, a small post in a private facebook group and get by. I never want to burden anyone. It's not a burden to me when I get a call, but I am a different person and I understand that not everyone feels the way I do.

But yesterday...I tried to fight it but there were times that were excruciating. I wasn't even in good enough shape to call my sister or mother because it would have scared them to death. There were moments I had it under control with medication, but other moments I needed help. Every. Single. Person. I reached out to had no time for me. I left messages that were unreturned. I heard excuses when I did get through. Not even good excuses...one "friend" was in the hospital...one "friend" had lost her phone...one "friend" told me bluntly that she was going through it herself and had nothing to give me...I had never reached out to any of them before. These were not people who didn't understand, they were grieving mothers, all of them...who I had known the longest and felt the closest to which was why I chose them to reach out to in the first place.

Thank God I felt better today...but I am so hurt by 5 women. So hurt. I thought we had a sisterhood, a blood bond...Why did it happen? Why??? We have all been through hell, it was my understanding that when a fellow grieving mother was falling down a black hole one of her trusted advisors would step up and pull her out, hold her, talk her off the ledge. I suppose I put too much trust in others...I know I expect too much, but I only expect as much as I am willing to give myself, anytime. I wonder if I should just withdraw...I'm putting my heart out there and I really think I am helpful at times, but my goodness, my feelings are really hurt. And yesterday, when I was actually begging my husband to let me "go" and trying to explain to him that if he only knew what I was feeling he would let me go peacefully...I really needed a trusted sounding board that I thought I shared a bond with. NOT a suicide hotline, not any hotline or stranger, someone who knows the real me and knows my whole story.

I am just hurt...sorry to go on so...Am I STILL too naive???

I am sorry you are hurt and that no one could be there for you in the way that you needed. Please do not give up on your sisters of the heart and sometimes the bravest thing we can offer IS our truth. It feels as if the friends that you called did speak their truth in that moment and could not be there for you and I'm sorry that they could not be. It was what was "for now" and not "forever" is my hope.

You are not naive, Gina, just terribly disappointed and hurt. I'm grateful that today was a better day and that you journaled and are expressing how this is feeling for you because how you feel matters.

The one thing that I have learned about the dark abyss is that when I fall into it I'm the only one who can pull myself out. No one else can do this for me, yet they can stand by, wait and will be the first faces I see as I emerge.

Gentle care to Cassi's mom from Douglas and me,
XO Joanie

Dear Gina, A lot of what you have written resonates with me so much. I have desperate days when I try reaching out to people and nobody responds and I feel as though I'm going off my head! I'm on facebook, message me anytime, I'm always checking in.

I feel for you so very much.

Oh Gina, your words were so close to my heart. To this day I do my best to function by the words "be the kind of friend you would like to have" yet continually find myself (in my words) abandoned by those I "thought" I could lean on when I have slipped over the abyss. And nothing...
Please don't get me wrong, I too know that there are the SOTH here that I can trust to understand and "be there" but it's the people around me daily or, like my sister who you'd think would stand with me toe to toe.
Like Joanie said, at the end of the day it is our own strength that lifts our souls out of that blackness and breathes just a whisper of life into our broken beings. Maybe we trust too much. Maybe we are naive. Would I want us to be any different? Not a chance. It's who we are, woven into our fibre of our being yet, when we need it the most, the down and dirty, we seem to be lost.
I do not have a husband to concern myself with. The emotions, the helplessness of being the protector and not being able to "fix" the issue. And the female trying to be honest in the emotions. You said about not being able to call your sister or your mom, worried about scaring them. I feel the same with my daughter Chase. When I'm in the abyss, I too am afraid to call her. Afraid the depth of my despair will scare her. And so I am silent. And my strength seems to pull me through, even in the silence...
Thank you for sharing. Thank you for putting into words a very real part of this journey.
Be well, find just a moment of peace or, if that's too much right now, just breathe. Just breathe...
Holding you and Cassi in my heart, xoxo Jason's Mom...

I'm sorry, Gina, that others weren't there for you in your darkest of moments - I struggle with this and have most of my life - I have had times when I just want to reach out and have reached out only to have that other person be there for me and BUT be busy with something else or while they are TALKING TO ME, THEY ARE CLEARLY DOING OTHER THINGS because I can hear it.....yet when a friend calls me, I sit down and don't get ice from the ice maker, or put my friend on speaker phone while mopping the kitchen - that undivided attention means everything......and we don't always get it - I'm sorry. Not one of us is perfect and the hard realization is that life goes on and sometimes, a friend just doesn't have the time @ that minute.....makes me sad

I think, too, when we lose our only child, that being there @ all times, no matter what for them, is gone and it leaves such a void, that I just want someone to be there for me like that and I have found it is unrealistic on my part.....

Still, in saying all of that - it leaves me feeling sad, because it always comes back to me, and me alone who has to keep going, no matter how long that might take.....IF ONLY one person reached out......

Sorry, Gina - that's why I journal because I know eventually, it will be answered and in the mean time, I sit and breathe......Love you. Vicki

I'm too am very sorry those you reached out to were unavailable and/or unable to offer what you needed. As Joanie said, "for now, not forever". I've called others when I was in need and they were not where they could offer help. I've also been called upon, and in that specific moment in time, I was unavailable or unable to help. It didn't have anything to do with not caring, not wanting to help; but only that in that exact moment, help from them (or myself) was not possible.

And I love what Vicki said......she writes, then sits back and breathes, knowing eventually it will be answered.

Tight hugs,
Teri

Hi Gina, there have been times that I have been disappointed by others who could not or would not listen when I needed to talk. Some days it is harder to accept than other days. Most of the time I can understand how busy folks are and how they may be reluctant to hear about my pain but some days it rubs me the wrong way and for me, I've found it's more about me and less about them. Some days I just have less tolerance. And you know what? We are grieving moms but we are just as human as anyone else. I find journaling here always helps me. I know my SOTHS will reach out & validate my feelings when they read it and it makes me feel calmer knowing support is on the way.
Gentle hugs and love to you and dearest Cassi, Linda

Gina, life is a challenge it has been for me. Helping others helps me heal. and I hope you get the same from the helping of others. I do not have any knowledge or special insight, my question is have you asked Cassi to help you. When I am stuck, I will talk to Mike and ask him for guidance sometimes is will come to me other times the message comes from someone else who did not know I needed just that support. I believe Mike gave someone a nudge in my direction. This may not work for you but if you find a way to help heal yourself that would be a gift from Cassi.

This too shall pass. Life will bring new experiences, and emotions. We have been badly injured. It will take time! We are all in it together. My excuse is a family crisis that left me with my old pall, pill, Xanax for company.
