Computer Issues

I've been having quite a few difficulties lately, but nothing very bad.
I got a new mouse for my laptop and the scroll wheel died.
Meanwhile I was installing the Windows 8 Beta over my laptop, causing me to lose everything on my laptop. This was completely expected, however, hence why I backed everything up on my external hard drive (HD).
To add insult to injury, as I was going to my father's house to get a copy of the Windows 7 installation ISO file on my external HD, it died, causing me to lose ALL of my files and music. That happened while at my father's house, so he gave me Windows 7 on a DVD instead.
Fuck. Over 400GB of music and files - gone. Fuck Fuck.
That caused me to go into a mild depression last night.
Then to add insult to injury as I was playing around with Windows 8 I did the updates and it ended up in a BSOD Boot Loop. It automatically tried to repair itself but was unable to. It was a good thing I had a DVD with windows 7 on it, so I was able to reinstall Windows 7. I wanted to do that anyway. I just wish I didn't lose my files in the process.

Today I had an appointment with my therapist and she decided to focus on that I seem to define myself by my issues. Its easy for me to list off all the 'problems' that I have, but not easy for me to list off all my other traits. She gave me some homework to do. I am to make two lists. The first list is all the 'issues' that do NOT define me (ex. Bipolar Disorder, Addict, Histrionic). The second list is of all of my traits. What makes me who I am (ex. A daughter, loving, funny). This will be an interesting homework assignment for me to complete.

Computers and life -- oh, the challenges we face.

Sending good thoughts.

There is a book you may want to read: Change your thoughts, change your life by Wayne Dyer, it has helped me keeps incidents like the ones you had in perspective. As it deals with the teachings of Tao which are, well, eye opening to say the least.

One thing, I learned from computer related problems is as follows:

1) Not to rely so much on external drives as they can fail just like regular hard drives. not all is lost, you can get a recovery program and you can get your stuff back, there are some that are free on PCworld.com. It\'ll be time consuming but worth it.

2) Which leaves you with the other alternative which is to use DVD-Roms to back up the back up as these have a tendency to not fail unless you do something physical to the disk.

3) Never ever, as tempting as it is, to download any kind of beta software. Furthermore, do not update your O.S. unless it has gone through all the growing pains it needs to before you even venture there.

4) Let us always remember that even in instances like these, there is a lesson to be learned, so let\'s look for it instead of knee jerking into depression. Last weekend I went through hell and came away from some life altering lessons because I chose to look for them instead of staying angry and inert.

5) There is confusion about what makes us who we are in modern culture, daughter for instance is a label, it does not make you who you are, it makes you how you will relate to your parents and others who see you as such, if that makes sense, it is in other words a role, not who you are. Loving and funny, those make you who you are but not quite, what makes you who you are, is independent of traits, who you are is love. That\'s it! Nothing else, everything else is added unto you by others, so perhaps you can abstain from attaching labels to yourself given to you by others.

Hugs,
Wolf
