Class update
Ok, I got into the Accelerated Machinist class, got the scholarship, got the book for the class, and attended the first week. Day two of class had us in the machine shop, already - working on the lathe to create something from a length of metal. It was loads of fun - I have never gotten to do anything like that. By day three, we were working on phase one of a new project - it was tougher, with smaller tolerances - smaller range for error. I mean SMALL - as in 0.0002 range for error.... where 1 is an inch, but everything is measured to 0.0002.....
Thus far I am having fun - it is a challenge, but still fun. Dangerous machinery, carving metal like butter,... Learning to make stuff. A friend who welds is cheering me on - she can't do machining, but figures we could team up - she can weld it, I can make it, together we can sell it. Of course, I have to have the machines and tools to do it - just as she has to have the tools for welding. The lathe and all costs a lot more than her welding kit. Still, it could lead to working someplace for good money - and a fun, challenging career.

WOW, I am so happy for you. You found something that you enjoy doing, and your learning new things. On top of that, you have also teamed up to utilizing two different skills to get the job done and possibble make money in the future. That is one of the things that defines humans, the ability to solve problems and make new solutions that gain a positive result. I am proud of you. :)

For the two of us to team up work-wise, we both would have to invest $$ neither of us has; but yeah. She currently works part-time (2 days a week) in a cloth store - she who loves welding. Meanwhile, I am learning machining, and the lathe I have been using in class costs more $$ than I see in five years\' time. However, the teachers are both employees of local companies that are looking to hire from among the students who make it through the class.
I keep having to make sure I am not dreaming, when I am having so much fun learning this stuff in class,......
