Changing records at the VA
Ok, so I've gotten my SSN changed over to my new name and gender, my driver's license changed to my new name and gender, and now I'm working on getting my records in the VA's system corrected.
Turns out that they have a set process - though few of the VA's people seem to know about it - for doing this. With all the proper papers - containing exact wording, detailed info, and from the correct people - the VA will open a second file, linked to your SSN, under the new name and gender. Both your original files and your new one will remain accessible via your SSN, but the new file will be set as default to come up first.
Not a perfect solution, but better than nothing.
I'm waiting on the Dr. to send me a letter worded exactly as the VA requires, on his letterhead, with all the info the VA demands about him, his license, etc. so I can finish this hoop.
Once that's done, the bank - BB&T - will be the last hold-out; having balked at making the requested changes despite all the legal papers - court order, driver's license, SSN,.. - that I showed them. May have to simply move to a different bank, since they are refusing.
Get this - to make those changes in the VA's records, I have to take all the required info in person to the Entitlements office at the local VA branch. NOT the Vital Records, as I was repeatedly told by various offices in the VA.
Hopefully, this will soon all be done and over.
