Cause and Effect
We have a big spruce tree in front of our house which we planted over 35 years ago. It was a tree that was in the way of a shed I wanted to build but I wanted to relocate this little tree instead of cutting it down, so I dug it up and planted it in front of our house directly in front of our kitchen window. About 10 years ago we wanted to hang some bird feeders where we could see them from inside the house so we cut the lower branches of the spruce tree on the side facing the house so we could hang some feeders. It worked out quite well except for the squirrels which had easy access to the bird food but it was ok as I reloacated them about 8 miles away to a nearby lake. We always leave them a good bye present of a hand full of sunflower kernals. They seem to be happy at their new retirement home.
Last winter I learned about tree hugging and how great it can make one feel being conneded to the trees and to mother earth through her root system. It did seem to make me feel really good so every time we had a snow storm, I would make it a priority to stop and give this tree a hug while shoveling snow off the front walkway. No matter how cold it was out side, I would always give this tree a hug. When the weather warmed up I stopped hugging the tree. I had other things to do that kept me very busy. The other day it was really hot outside. Dressed only in a t shirt I took a break from weed whacking and gave this tree a big tight hug.
Now let me explain how a spruce tree heals itself after an injury. Whenever you cut a branch off, the tree makes a very sticky substance called Pitch which seeps into the area where the missing branch was and fills it in. It was pretty well frozen in the winter but under 80 degree heat, it came to life again and I never noticed how much pitch there was until I tried to get myself unglued from this tree. That tree previously had alot of limbs that I had removed and now shirt and arms were covered with the stickiest substance known to man. My partner was watching from the kithen window and laughing. Looking back, I thought it was pretty funny also. It's like the tree was paying me back.
That was my laugh of the day, and it was on me but that's ok. Hope y'all have a great day.

Bill....The better parts of that t shirt will soon become a rag lol
Hi Bob,thank you for sharing the story, and your memories of your spruce tree, and how it's brought you all lots of great joy over the years :) it's amazing, the peacefulness, and joy nature can bring :) it's so nice, you all enjoy watching the birds in the tree :) that's a cool, and fun story also about the sap from the tree, it reminds me of a memory, of when i was talking to a friend on the phone, and i was leaning against our pine tree, and after a bit ,i noticed this pine sap had gotten on my hand, it was very sticky. your story and memories reminds me of your experience :) my family got our pine trees from Maine, my nana and grandpa use too live in Maine, and my parents, older brothers, and sister brought 2 pine trees back from Maine ,to plant in our yard here :)
Wishing you all continued joys of enjoying the views of nature, all throughout the seasons :)
Yeah you might have to use that shirt as a rag.

Nutz!!
You totally made my day with this, Bob. I believe your spruce has been waiting for this moment. You thought you were giving a heartfelt hug. Your tree thought, "Yeah, welcome back limb-snatcher. Let's see how you like losing mobility."
As a kid, I had a similar experience with a pitch-producing spruce tree in our front yard. These days, I find oaks and beeches to be much more willing huggees. : )
Thanks for sharing your wonderful story!
Thankyou Chris and thankyou for all the wonderful family stories you have posted through the years! They have been a joy for us to read!
CaliforniaItalianlover Thankyou!
Jan, I love all furry critters, also! Thankyou!
Judy, lol! Now, I just put my hands on the tree where there is no pitch and that works just as well! Thankyou!
Fascinating journal. I learnt a lot from it.
I never realize that hugging a tree could do a person good. Sorry that you got that picture all over you and I would imagine. It was funny to your partner watching you.
I love to sit at my kitchen table in the morning with my coffee with my back door open, and I watch the birds having a feast at my feeder and my suet, unlike you, though I actually threw them nuts around the yard for the squirrels, because they are all gods creatures :-)
Take care and have a wonderful Sunday
Thankyou Barry!
Thankyou Jean! Yes! There is science behind the benefits of tree hugging.

Beautiful post. I feel so much better when I am sitting under a tree, napping. And never mind science, just do what feels right. Hug a tree. Hugs my friend.
