i have such a vanity within me - i think i want to create something or do something

that will impact the world in a big way - iconic way if you will - but i realize that I ought to choose

something that is realistic - that seeing the world that I inhabit and just decide to help in the way that I can.

If it's helping one small corner of the world do their thing then I will focus on that.

Proof unavailable, but I do believe there is a reason "Vanity" is called, "A Deadly Sin." As with all of the Deadly Sins, it is a natural and potentially productive part of the human genome, but grows deadly when it becomes your reason for living.

I go for the balance. I allow myself the vanity of idle daydreams of Immortal Fame, but keep my daily responses to the here and now. To my mind, it be the same logic behind the environmentalist slogan, "Think Global. Act Local."

I think it’s normal to have those feelings of wanting to make an impact or make a difference through ‘art.’ I had experiences when I was younger where I felt pressure to participate in the world in an artistic way based on some peers I had at that time. And I’ve spent all these years beating myself up for not achieving success and being so overwhelmed by the steps to success that I’m blocked creatively. Tortured artist - I’m being dramatic about myself but it’s true. We are in a society that applauds greatness and it can be hard to make space for the gratitude it requires to be comfortable doing important work in small ways. If anything, the pandemic has brought to the well-deserved spotlight that society runs on Essential Workers and the work done each day in grocery and retail stores are the greatest contributors of all.

Did you used to show art publicly Mark?

thanks Nikki. I had one show with another artist. I won a couple of awards in the academic arena
but other than that - no. :)

That’s awesome Mark! Do you have any paintings you’ve already done currently at home that you feel comfortable showcasing? Even an Etsy listing?

I have a bunch of crappy paintings I’ve done under the bed,,stashed away, and a bunch of other blank canvases. I once participated in a staff art show at a former museum I worked at and ended up in a psych ward a few months later, and the trauma of it all hindered me from trying to showcase art publicly in any way. That was a long time ago. It’s time to get motivated and inspired again. Staying grounded of course.

that's great you did art as well. I haven't painted in ages. Nothing new to show...

That is awesome sweetie... I think that we all want to help and help a lot.... I don't think that that's abnormal at all....You helped Blue in a big way... and all of the cats that you used to visit... That helped them in a big way ya know

Maybe recognizing what is a big way for different beings might be key here..... Big squishy hug.... xo

Here's to looking at ways that give you satisfaction and allow you to share the special moments (painting is a special moment, I do it rarely, mostly I do drawing in pencil)!
