Being On-Line
I was thinking a lot today about on-line friendships. I have many on-line friends, and a few I've had for years. There are even one or two that I've gotten to know well, shared a lot with and maybe one day, we will meet in real life. I wonder if we were to meet, would it be the same? I accept that may never happen, but with these one or two, yes, I think it would be a lot the same. Then, I also think that for all the messages and hugs and support from friends on-line that if we had just met in real life, maybe we would have never even taken the chance to become friends. To me, the truth is, we are all different on-line. Even those of us who are very upfront and honest about who we are, it is a different forum and a different dynamic. We are safer here and behind the screen. Most on-line friends don't know that I curse like a sailor, that I hate getting dressed (and even my dressing up is in the most comfortable option available), my political views, or a lot of my various flaws or virtues - they just don't come up that often in the on-line world. Here, you don't really know what I look like, how I sound and even if you really, really like me here, I might really scare you in real life - who knows? I read an article not too long ago that was saying how many people that we pass by all the time that we might really like, if we got passed the first surface glance - how many times our immediate reaction is "what's up with her hair?" or "her voice is deep for a woman" (and all those first reactions that fly through our brains) and so we just go on by without even attempting to know the person. I sometimes think that out of all my on-line friends, that in real life, most of them would just pass on by.
That's the end of my random, rambling thoughts for tonight....

what timing!! lol...
for days now, i had been pondering the very same things.
make-up vs no make-up, funky hair, or all dressed in cameo.
online we all wear different masks at different times, for different reasons.
technology being what it is, has led us to socialize & communicate so
differently. however, we still tend to fall back on *first impressions* all too fast. i try to remember that ole addage- *dont judge a book by its
cover*
i have met online friends off-line & i was the same person IN person & visa-versa. =)
still in contact w/ them. however, with my current situation, i have chosen to not have friends, much safer.
have to admit, i am a smidgen jealous of those who can post their pics on their profile (yes, im still hoping people are honest) wish i didn\'t have to hide.
glad to know i wasn\'t the only one rambling on the same page.
thanks so much!!!....aik
Remember the Jetson\'s cartoon? They would have face to face chats on their computers and everyone had their screen mask they would put on to cover how they looked at the moment? I used to crack up at that concept! Now, my screen face is the real me (or at least I think it is!) and my in real life face is what I think others would want to see. Hmmmm....now you got me thinking again....
hahahah I love to cuss also but never do on line (well sometimes on peoples journals) but mainly because a lot of people were cursed at by their Ns and I do not want to trigger them.
I think I am the same online as off line, but of course in person you get see ME and not who you think I am by the words I write. I have met several of my on line friends in person and it was fun.
I met this one girl from the WoN board. We went to lunch. I am not kidding you, we met at 11:30 and I went to the bathroom it was 3PM. I had to look at my cellphone because I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me!!! We had talked for 4 hours straight!!!
But then I am a talker ;)
