Barium Enema
I just called in sick today, even though I am working from home. I try to be honest and on a day like today I am too worn out to get any work done. That would be the after effect of the Barium Enema, surprisingly the most grueling test I have undergone so far.
First you fast from 8am the day before the test. No solids, no milk based products. In the evening before there is a schedule of stuff to do and take so that interrupted the rest cycle since I was getting up almost every hour to follow these instructions.
So I start the day weak and tired. 2 hours before the enema you have to do a colonic. For me it was surprisingly painful. Not supposed to be, have done them before, seems there is definitely inflammation in my bowels because as they pumped the fluids through I had to resort to my Lamaze breathing.
After a really uncomfortable hour with a tube stuck up my butt, I hobble off to the next location for the actual enema. When I got there they kept me waiting 1/2 hour past the appointment time. This is now almost 3 hours into this ordeal, I am exhausted, I am in pain and emotional as heck..I really just wanted to bust out bawling in the waiting room.
Anyhoo, held it together, hobbled into the lab and started a round that I can only describe as calisthetnics. For the enema they stick another tube up your butt, this one with some radioactive solution. Then they take a number of shots, which requires much rolling over, turning this way and that, scooting up and down, all the time while trying not to dislodge the ever present tube up you-know-where.
It was particularly painful for me when they pumped air into the region which was swollen to begin with, insulted by the colonic and now just downright outraged by the treatment. By the time I got off that table I could barely walk.
They say the results will be sent to my doctor today. I am too out of it to care too much right now. My lower abdominal region is still complaining about the indignities it was subjected to, my body feels like I've been through the ringer, can barely keep my eyes open and my brain is fried. Like it or not, today is another rest day...
PS : Not happy about this at all, have tons of time sensitive work to do which I just cannot manage today. Also its that time on the house project where the major construction is done, finishes are going in and you really need to pay attention at this point. Unfortunately I can't. We've lost several days of work simply because I am now not physically able to even supervise from a distance. I really wanted to be in my new room for my birthday, that is this week so not happening. Not even sure I'll make it for Xmas. Just have to be patient, take it one day at a time, I'll get there when I get there (teeth grinding on that one).
